ok so i got a 790 math and 650 reading on my 2nd time taking the SAT 1. Its above the 50th percentile for students admitted (1440) but will my reading hurt me? Or, say if i apply to the engineering school will they be more than happy with a 1440 and the 790 i got on math... and hopefully high math 2 and chem SAT 2s? Should i retake and shoot for 1500?

and also, if i dont have the class rank that i want and im like barely top 10% or maybe not even, do i really need a 1500 to have a chance? Does it balance out the good but not excellent gpa and rank?

A 1440 is a little above average score at Cornell, however, if you’re not in the top ten percent of your class, you are below average. So, if you want balance things out, try and get your critical reading score up so you can have that 1500+ score. Good luck!

And you have a chance as it is, however a 1500+ will help you have a better chance.

Is there a page for Cornell similar to this one for Brown: [Brown Admission: Facts & Figures](<a href=“Undergraduate Admission | Brown University”>Undergraduate Admission | Brown University)
If so, that would be really helpful.

If you’re applying to engineering, I really don’t think raising your CR score will significantly impact your chances. Engineering really wants exceptionally strong math/science applicants. If I were you, I wouldn’t worry about my SAT score. You did well, and most importantly, you scored well on the math. Anything higher won’t really change your chances. Remember, GPA is more important than SAT for Cornell, but GPA is hard to assess. If you’re top 10%, then you do come off as an average candidate (which is a lot better than being below average). That said, if you were top of your class for math/science, your chances for Engineering are higher than overall GPA might indicate.

Unfortunately, Cornell doesn’t release data on the rejected students (at least it’s unfortunate insofar as trying to assess chances). If you’re above the 50th percentile for accepted students, I can only imagine that puts you at least in the 70th percentile for all applicants.

wow, thanks guys i never thought id have a shot at cornell, but i mean if i shoot for the moon, even if i miss ill land among the stars ( i think thats right lol). Originally i was looking at like deleware, penn state but i think im capable of going much higher and my SAT really boosted my confidence. I really should be in top 10 %, if not its because of 9th grade… i got a B in art and C+ in spanish… otherwise ive had straight As and my math and science gradeshave been A, A+ always… so i think going for engineering will increase my chances which is awesome. Ive always been one of the smartest math kids and good in science… sorry im writing so much haha but i have a couple other questions…
- Does Cornell take into account every class youve taken even art and other willy nilly classes? Or are your main classes counted more heavily, because then im set id think. 2. And does applying to engineering WHATEVER SCHOOL IT MAY BE but more emphasis on math and science? Because if gpa was based off those two id be right up there hanging with the best. 3. And if i have a shot at all for Cornell should i also apply and shoot for schools such as Carnegie, UVA, UNC? THANKS EVERY1!!!

and are there different admission peoples for different schools within the college you are applying to?

That your GPA drag is entirely in 9th grade definitely increases your chances. For engineering, they almost won’t care at all about those grades in 9th grade. Any top school will weight your most recent years the most. That’s not to say 9th grade doesn’t count, but it counts less and if you’re doing engineering, I think your GPA may actually be an asset for you, given your grades in math/science. Keep in mind, most engineering students excelled in math/science, but also excelled in their other subjects. However, if all you did poorly in was Art and Spanish in 9th grade, I really see you as being above average for even accepted students.

Overall, Cornell looks at all classes. The candidates that apply are too strong to not do so. However, if you had straight A’s except 2 classes in 9th grade, I really don’t see that hurting your chances much. Further, Engineering does weight math/science moreso than the other colleges. So if you were top 7% in all classes, that’s not bad, but Engineering will value you more if you were top 3% in math/science, and top 15% in your other classes. Other colleges at Cornell may prefer that person who was top 7% across the board (esp. Arts, where you don’t apply to a major). Note: That’s a rather crude example meant to illustrate a point rather than actually be a good guideline.

I only do Cornell chances, but given Cornell is a top Engineering school, I’d encourage you to apply to any top school that’s on your list. You certainly would seem to have at least a small chance at any of them, and overall, I think your chances are fairly solid. I’d be surprised if you applied to a bunch of top Engineering school and didn’t get into at least one.

wow, thats awesome haha thanks man!!! Even having a shot sounds good. I just reallllllyy have to bang out this year… im an 11th grader if i didnt say so already. Just to give an idea of the classes i take and what i got

college accounting- 93
ap chem- 87 (will bump it up, not worried)
honors english- 95 (i didnt take AP, how does that look?)
Spanish R- 88 (will bump up)
Principles of engineering- 86 ( really stupid class, dont learn anything, teachers dumb, dumb grades… just dumb overall lol but ill get a 96 consistenly rest of the year)
pre calc H- 98 (AP calc nxt year… no ap offered this year)
SUPA us history- 93 (syracuse university project advance)

All honors are weighted 1.05 and AP and college classes 1.15 if thats not universal… and spanish, POE, and ap chem i now understand some things about the class… such as how much labs and stuff can affect your grade and spanish some other little things… gonna boost em up to 90s… And my final avg for math and science are always like 95s or higher and ive gotten 3 straight 95s on all of my New york state regents exams

for ECs… i played soccer 9-10 lacrosse hopefully 9-12 if i make varsity… and DECA, Natural Helpers (this one should look good, students select a couple kids from the grade that are nice and stuff and we just do peer mediation and learn social aiding skills and whatnot) i joined mathletes this year, and maybe will do robotics. I also gottttta get some more comm service hours… im also in english and national honors society… possibly business i have to say that i will take more business classes next year which im not sure of… and I think i might take the SAT 1 more time and get around 1450-1500 2200-2250 … going to get a good ap chem grade…Chem and Math 2 subject tests high 700s most likely… and would national merit semifinalist help? I think i aced the psat lol… and FINAL question for now lol for schools that look at all grades no matter what… would my 660 in math 1 and 560 in global SAT 2 bring me down? I had barely any sleep and i was a mess haha it was a bad day. My guidance counselour told me to take them but it didnt go well… no idea why id take a SS one…
