what goes on a college resume?

I know that most people have tons of amazing ECs and win lots of awards, and not all of that goes on their college resume.
So my question is, what DOES go on your college resume? Is there some sort of formula, like: the best 30 things you've ever done, or only state or nationally ranked competitions? etc...
How does one decide what does on your resume?

at my school everyone just put basically everything they did inside and outside of school since the 9th grade.

i get the feeling that things you did when you were 11 and 12 don't really matter to colleges

Extracurricular activities, awards, GPA, standardized test scores, name of your high school, rank, work experience, leadership positions, special talents, summer programs.

You choose the most important of what I listed. It should be condensed. There's no sense writing that you won districts when eventually you became state champion. It also does not make sense to list that you were in Key Club when you attended just one meeting. Choose things that best represent YOU and your abilities and experience within that 9th-12th grade range. (For instance, a 40-year old man with a BS and JD will not list their job at McDonald's when they were 16 on his resume.)

On the other hand, a high school senior applying to a university (especially if a business or comm major candidate) would probably want to list that they were the asst mgr at a McDonald's! ;-)

wait... so, if you win awards at regionals; and then place at state for some of them... do you just ignore all the regionals stuff, or ...how would that work?

I'm sending you a copy of mine.

well then, how would you list them??

You need to balance the number of awards listed:

If for instance, you placed at regionals and later became state champion, it's a redundant and silly to show, at each step, what you placed: First in districts. Second in regionals. First in States.

I wouldn't ignore everything but I would omit the progression and show the BEST you have:

9th Grade: Regionals First Place
10th Grade: State Champ
11th Grade: Regionals First Place
12th Grade: National Champ

You want to lead an impression and anything smaller is excessive.

okay, thanks!!

HIGH SCHOOL RESUME (one hs recommendation):

Include the following items in your high school resume. List the grades (9th-12th) during which you participated in each activity or received each honor:[ul][]Name, address, telephone, e-mail address
[]Clubs and organizations: state if you were an officer and during which grades
[]Honors and awards: for instance, Outstanding Student in a class
Talents and skills
[]Community activities: amount of time spent and during which grades you participated
[]Volunteer activities: in school or community; list number of hours spent and during which grades
[]Work experience: list the length of employment and grade level[/ul]Another hs recommends:

Academic achievements

School activities

Athletics

Community activities

Volunteer service

Full/part-time work

Summer activities

Hobbies and interests
