What good design schools are there in the west?

What good design schools are there in the west? Especially in California?
It seems like all the good design schools are in the East.. Pratt, Parsons, RISD, etc. ;(

california college of the arts or something like that

"Design" is a very broad field -- industrial design, graphic design, interior design, etc. What specific area of design are you interested in?

The best known, and certainly the most selective, "design school" in the West is the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA. It may not be very well known outside the western US (East Coast bias?), but its programs and facilities are very impressive and every bit as good as Pratt or Parsons. Other respected art/design schools (although a definite step down from ACC) are the Cornish College of the Arts (Seattle), California College of the Arts (San Francisco), and the Otis College of Art & Design (Los Angeles).

On the public school side, Arizona State University has an excellent ID program. And many of the California state schools (San Diego State, San Jose State, and San Francisco State, among others) offer some art and design programs.

Yes, Art Center College of Design in Pasadena is most well known followed by CalArts, which has a higher endowment. Otis college of art is also well known.

You should look into UCLA ,which has a very well known, and well respected art program. However, I don't know about their design programs.

i'm not really sure about what type of design i should go into.. I wanted to go to Art center, but they don't have a foundation program.. so .. I'm not sure if I should go there or not~:(

This info is very helpful, but my daughter wants to go to a traditional 4-year university in California, not an art school. She is considering UC Davis, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, CSU Long Beach, CSU Chico, CSU San Diego, CSU Northridge. Anyone have anything good or bad to say about the programs at any of these schools?

My ex-roomate went to cal poly SLO for graphic design. He got a job about a month after he graduated and speaks VERY highly of the program. He said he's glad he didn't get into UCLA because he seems to think cal poly has a better program. CP can be pretty selective itself, though. A lot has to do with the portfolio your daughter will submit.

I highly recommend Cal Arts and CSULB for art majors. Very difficult to get into the art school but you will not be disappointed. UCLA offers a BA in art, but it's a general degree. The others offer a BFA. Take a portfolio to each of them for an evaluation.
