I had nearly those same scores (720cr 800w), and had the same concern. I'm not convinced that it was worth it - I could have focused more on M/CR and settled for a 700 in W.

I'm really not trying to brag...I'm seriously a bit disappointed by the scores.

My parents EXPECTED me to score over 2300 after I did well on my PSATs and all the practice in the big blue book. I feel like I let people down by not living up to this mark.

I am aware that these are great scores...three years ago, when I was a slacker "B" student I would have absolutely killed for these...but I've come a long way since then and have become a bit of a perfectionist (too much for my own good, really)

THE OTHER THING IS:

I am indeed a white, unhooked applicant (with a weak freshman GPA)...and I need all the help I can get.

I do want to point out (I'm not sure if others have) that some schools, in addition to using the SAT writing for admission, also use it for placement once you've been admitted; I think there are a few schools that may actually exempt you from a freshman writing class if your SAT writing is over a certain score.

I got the same 790 WR score. If i had the choice, i would definitely trade that with my 730 CR. i honestly did not care about the WR section at all - all that grammar stuff seemed so useless. Math + CR = definitely more important.
