What good is of Business Major...

...besides the finance and accounting?

It seems like most people who plan on transferring as a Business major will concentrate their study on mostly finance area, and some accounting.

But as far as I'm concerned, there are other areas to Business, such as entreprenuership, marketing, information system, ethics, supply chain, internation business, etc.

However (btw, this is just my own opinion), I believe all those areas (especially entrepreneurship and marketing) aren't really ummm... what's that word.. not very classroom learning materials; they are more things that you eventually learn more through experience at work rather than sitting through lecture all day.

However, Finance and Accounting are quite different. They actually require lots of "classroom learning" before going on to the real world and I think this is one of many reasons why people choose to concentrate their studies in Finance and Accounting.

In another word, I believe that Finance and Accounting are the only "useful" area of study in the field of business that requires more than "experience". And whereas other field of study teaches you more of soft skills, finance and accounting actually teaches you some of hard skills that requires a special degree to master it.

Care to share you view on this matter?

my moms boss (CEO of company) has a business degree and MBA....i would think that business majors are more likely to run companies, whether or not they start the actual company...they'll also be more likely to oversee operations of a company, say oversee the accounting department but never actually touch a check or tax form, but make sure those doing payroll know how much income is coming up and then relay it to the tax dept, that sorts of stuff

business majors don't often go into finance.. they don't know enough math :P

hey dhl3, i've noticed that your 1st choice (or one of the top ones) is UCLA. therefore, you applied for business econ. what are you planning to do with an undergraduate degree in bus. econ? if you get into LA, are you just planning on minoring in Accting and then just focus more on an accting future instead of a career goal more related with econ?

i'm just wondering myself because i always ask ppl who're majoring in bus econ at UCs because they want to go into business and want to be in the UC system. none of them are quite sure, but i also ended up becoming another one of those, wanting to go into UCLA for business econ because it incorporates 'business' even if it's not bus. admin...

I think most business majors don't even know what freakin' area of business they want to get into. They just think, "Business...nice suit, fat check...I'm in!"

^^^ yeah, definitely. i've heard the saying that ppl going into business majors don't really know exactly what they want to do. they just want a wealthy outcome/future off of the major but don't have a set direction.

I am still choosing from marketing, entrep. and admin.

HAH! this is why i am considering econ.....man... im so confused >.<

I am going to doing supply chain management (entering college Fall '07). Ive researched this a lot (although no real experience, but as much reading and asking questions as I could, along with my sister being in a business school), and I think Supp. Chain could really utilize all of my skills effectively and simultaneously. Obviously, some of the program will be wishy-washy, but it will give me at least some idea and some skills I would need to pursue a career in that field.

Who knows...I may end up hating it...but for now, it's what I got.

eww
