Hello, I'm a sophomore student from SUNY Binghamton, and I'm considering transferring elsewhere. I've made good friends here, but I greatly dislike the general area (it seems very isolated, and the town isn't the best; I would prefer somewhere more urban), bad financial aid (my EFC is 0 so this is very important), and the weather is pretty horrible. I just have a feeling that I'd be much happier in another place, and I had this feeling since I've arrived here. However, I would only transfer if I could get into a better university than the one I'm in, but I'm not sure if I can with my sub par grades...

I'm mostly interested in schools in California, Illinois and New York because I have family/friends of family there, but I wouldn't mind other states.

Here's my profile:
I'm Hispanic; I come from Bolivia but I have US citizenship.
*My cum. GPA is 3.4 because I ruined my first semester with a C, but I've been making up for it since.
*My majors are English and Biology.

My college extracurriculars are the following:
*Green belt in Taekwondo.
*Animation Club.
*100+ hours shadowing a veterinary clinic in Bolivia.
*I am a member of Habitat for Humanity and I volunteer on the weekends.
*I was a TA for an English class for kids in Chile last summer.
*I'm going to do research on parakeet behavior next semester and I'm going to volunteer at a Children Hospital in Bolivia during my winter break.

If anybody could tell me what top schools would accept me, or just general advice, it would be greatly appreciated! :)

Try to raise your Gpa if you are looking at top 25 schools because mostly these are generally the ones with generous finaid for transfers UC schools won’t be a good idea unless u are from California

Jerzey Jon: While it does have nice weather, Arizona State University isn’t even in the Top 100, and it’s much less selective than Binghamton. I’m wondering if with my scores I can transfer to a Top 50. Thanks, though!

You’re a URM, raise the GPA to 3.7 and you are talking about a top 50 school. You have unlimited time to do this with certain schools (i.e. USC) since some don’t have a cap on excess units.

I would check out Vanderbilt, Emory, and Wellesley. They are (big) reaches for you, but they are known to have good financial aid for transfers.

h0wc0u1dif0rg3t: Which ones don’t have a cap on excess units? But that’s very helpful info, thank you!

college_ruled: Yeah, I don’t think I could get into those with my current grades… Do you know of any reasonable good university (better than Binghamton) that would accept me if I raise my GPA?

Maybe UWisconsin? Or maybe the UC schools that aren’t Berk/UCLA will be a good bet. You’ll probably have to pay, but if binghamton sucks that bad it’s worth it

I don’t understand why everyone is talking about the OP raising their gpa. The OP is currently a soph and at most, a mid-term report from spring semester will be taken into consideration for a fall 2010 jr transfer.
