What got me in?

I got accepted to UMich's College of Engineering, and I'm totally psyched about it, but seeing these deferral's stats, I don't see how they got rejected and I got in, because my stats are lower almost all around.

Here's my stats, tell me why you think I got in:
Residency: OOS, Louisville, Kentucky
GPA:3.91
ACT:28 (35 math, 26 science, 26 english, 26 reading, 8 essay, 25 english w/ writing)
ECs: NHS and French Club, not many hours of each, I may have put down Science Club, but I don't even think I was in that when I submitted my app lol.
Honors:
Essays: Probably not well written, I wrote them only to show my passions, and I didn't try to use bombastic language to enhance them, I just wrote about why I like Comp Engineering.
Recs: got 100% A+ and 5 in my AP stats class, and got that teacher to recommend me, and I didn't read it or hear from him, so I can't really say, but I don't think it was amazing, but probably good. Counselor I basically met this year lol. Should have been decent or good regardless though.
AP: Junior year: AP Language (4) AP Stats (5)
Senior year: AP Comp Sci, AP Calc BC, AP Psych, AP French, AP lit
Didn't take any AP Sciences or AP History, though my major didn't really require it.
Awards: Top 10%, Magna Cum Laude (upon graduation), Commonwealth Diploma (upon graduation)
School: Good public school for Kentucky, Terrible school as far as good schools go, not competitive, ~1300 students

The only thing that really makes me stand out versus a lot of these deferrals is my GPA, which was only a 3.91, but both B's were freshman year in BS classes, Econ & Gov and Health/PE (hahah....), but the school is so easy I'm able to sleep 3 hours a day during school and maintain a 4.0 every year.

Did I get lucky, or am I better off than I think?

whoa! lol…definitely better off than you think

also, look at your MATH score on your ACT…really boosted your chance of getting into Engineering cause of that

do they really look at subscores that intesively though? Overall I did pretty bad compared to most OOS applicants I would say

also being from KY probably helped

how does that help? Trust me, there is nothing good about Kentucky lol.

A 35 probably isn’t uncommon in Engineering. The average ACT is a 31, and you’d expect that people in Engineering would have higher Math than other subjects.

Your GPA is about median for those admitted. I see a lot of deferrals with 3.6/3.7 GPA.

being from Kentucky helps A LOT compared to other OOS applicants because UM gets very few applications from Kentucky so your sort of diverse

Being from Kentucky does help, it’s a more minor state when it comes to OOS applicants for UM, and yes they like a diverse range of students from different areas.

GPA is high and high ACT math score needed for COE. Also, if you are a girl, you were basically guaranteed COE.

Your rigor of course load 5 AP Senior year is really good, math act is good for engineering and being from Kentucky were your hooks. We are from Nebraska and that is a good state to apply from also. U of MI is very devoted to fullfilling their regional diversity factor. Way to go Kentucky. Are you planning to attend??

You asked if they really look at the subscores that closely and the answer for engineering is absolutely. The nature and rigor of your courseload is equally strong. Remember that APs are taught to a standardized curriculum, so even if your school is not “stellar,” achieving a 4 or 5 tells them that YOU are stellar. Don’t sell yourself short, and congratulations.
Also, never underestimate how meaningful strong recommendations are. You may have knocked it out of the park without even knowing it because your character and approach to learning were exemplary and gained the notice of your teachers ;)
