i'm a mechanical engineer at UCSD, and i was wondering what GPA do employers want. i've always heard 3.0 was kind of the cutoff, but do they just look at major classes or the whole thing? i just felt compelled to make this topic because i just got a C+ in a G.E. class I should have taken P/NP, but I've continued to get pretty solid (but not outstanding)grades in my engineering classes (B+/A- for the most part). thanks!

I don't think they'll mind you getting a C+ in history.

I heard people say employers look for a 3.4GPA

The way I generally see it, is the lower your GPA is, the more experience and interest in your field you have to express in your resume and verbally as well. They need solid reasons for hiring you. In fact, I've seen people with GPAs around the 3.0 line and even below that have gotten offers for quite nice positions that even people I know with 3.8s haven't gotten, just because of experience.

There are a number of employers who have minimum GPA requirements, often in the 3 to 3.2 range and that is usually stated as a minimum GPA in technical courses and separately overall.
