I only heard 3rd hand rumor, and games with them have been all cancelled. Any insights?

I believe a student committed suicide.

here is the email all Middlesex students were sent this afternoon by our head of school, Kathy Giles:

We learned today that Groton School has suffered the loss of one of its students. This is the saddest possible news for any school, and I’m sure that many of us know Groton students, faculty, and staff members who have been deeply affected. I received a call from Groton’s headmaster this morning, who explained that the school is designating Friday as the day to honor the student’s memory with an on-campus memorial service, after which the Groton students will leave on their long weekend. He requested that we postpone all of our Friday games and do our best to reschedule them over the rest of the fall.

We will be posting a news brief on the website to alert everyone to the change in schedule, and we will send out a special email to parents, but please let your friends and family know about the change if they were planning to come for the afternoon. If your travel plans need to change, please contact Mr. B. Smith as soon as possible.

Thanks – Mrs. Giles

From what I just heard it was a student who was sent home and facing disciplinary action.

It is really sad.

Can’t think of last time such tragedy happened at a BS. Anyone?

Very, very sad. My heart goes out to the student’s family and friends and the entire Groton community.

FayMom,

It’s happened more than you think - and it’s not just isolated to BS. And what you don’t hear about are the unsuccessful attempts. So sad - those children without safety nets and who don’t know that it’s possible to really mess up badly and recover.

Oh God, I really hate hearing this tragic news. What a heart-break. My heart goes out to the family and friends.

“So sad - those children without safety nets and who don’t know that it’s possible to really mess up badly and recover.” Yes, you’re so right, Exie.

So sad. It’s hard to even imagine what family and friends must be going through. My heart goes out to them.

It takes awhile for this to sink in as usually with cases such as these. Somewheres, someone is banging their head against the wall blaming themselves and shouldn’t be. My heart goes out to the parents, family, friends and school. There will always be the big “why” that will never really be determined. I’ve personally witnessed this behavior in college that I’ll never forget. There is no answer but time for healing. For the parents it will be a long miserable unending journey. For the kids reading this, I implore you to be kind to each other, look out for each other. Life is full of ups and downs, failures and successes, it is a big part of growing up and in order to learn that infallible part of life you have to let your self grow up. The last guy that was perfect was hung on a cross.

ops, you are so right; especially with your advice to the kids reading this. I might add that if we do not find ways to help one another, none of us stand a chance. We sometimes get wrapped up in the “big” charities and “community service” so much that it is very easy to overlook those closest to us. Be kind in a direct, quiet, personal way and you will have the greatest effect. But sadly, sometimes the pain people experience is so deeply within themselves that no one, not even their closest friends, can see it.

The entire Groton community will be in my prayers.

Any update/clarification on what happened/how the school addressed the matter with students/parents?

When I was the VP of my high school’s student council many years ago, we had a fellow student commit suicide. Very sad and a serious jolt to the school community. My heart goes out to the Groton family.

Any further news about this really unfortunate incident?
