What happened??

I was recently waitlisted by case western and I am having trouble understanding why. I AM NOT SAYING THAT I AM ENTITLED TO A SPOT! But I am a 3.93/2260 student and I am ranked 4/210 in my class. I participate in a wide range of ECs including an intense commitment to immunology research that I have gained national recognition for. I also bring a diversity aspect with my background that I brought forth powerfully in my essay (I even got a handwritten we loved your essay note on one of my acceptance letters). So far I have gotten in to UCLA (oos) and many others of similar caliber. I don't understand what the deal is here because I applied to case as a backup (scores well above range, 70% acceptance rate in 2009) but I expressed 0 interest. Any thoughts? Do they have an agenda here (yield protection for their incredibly low yield)? This brings forth a concern that I may have a problem in my application when other decisions come out

You got owned.

They might’ve pulled the Tufts/WUSTL/Carleton etc. Syndrome ordeal where the college puts overqualified applicants on the wait list because their college appears to be a backup judging by stats, extracurriculars and so forth. Bare in mind that this syndrome usually occurs at private schools. If you would prefer a dispute over your waitlisting, then go ahead and do so but since you say that this is a backup and you got into somewhere better, then this shouldn’t matter too much…

Stuff like this happens. There may not been much of a reason at all - at least not much of a reason that will be mirrored at other schools. Don’t worry about your other decisions - there’s nothing that can be done to change them now, so you’ll just have to see what they are in the next couple of weeks.

It may turn out that you’re accepted at lots of schools that are harder to get into. Again, these things happen.

Whatever caused the waitlisting, it’s not worth worrying about. It was probably due to a lack of interest exhibited, as many schools do - as you noted - do this to protect their yield (or in an attempt to improve it).

Thanks for the responses from everyone except Saugus. I talked with my counsellor today and he said that this happened with a couple kids at my school as well. I guess it’s nothing to worry about. Out of the 16 colleges I applied to case was probably 15th or 16th on the list so I am not upset in the least, especially considering that I have ucla as an option. Fingers crossed for the coming weeks

Maybe this attitude came across in your application essay.

^^^case doesn’t require any supplements other than the common app main which received a great deal of praise from other universities. So I’m pretty sure that attitude didn’t come across.

It’s not worth the time it took you to stroke the keys for your OP. Move on - go Bruins!

Is guess your right. I’ll forget about this and pray for more positive decisions in the next week
