After your FAFSA is processed, what can you do if your last name changes?

Hmmm - good question. But that leads to another question - a last name would only change for two reasons. One is if you are adopted - which I would think could be overcome easily enough by getting your name changed for your social security number and then providing the documentation about why it changed and your new social security card to the school. The other reason would be if you got married or divorced - which would change the FAFSA completely - but since FAFSA is a snapshot in time - it shouldn’t impact aid for that year - but could in the following years. Again - I would think proper documentation would be all that was required to give to the school.

There is not only two reasons for an individual to change his/her last name. You can also go to court and have your last name changed. This is something you really need to speak to the FA offices about. Last year, I filed my FAFSA in January under “Smith” and changed it to “Jones” in April. I did not have to file a new FAFSA, and I spoke with the admissions and financial aid offices to make sure everything would still be okay. They needed a copy of various documentation proving my name change was legal, and they had a form on their FA website for me to fill out. It really wasn’t a big deal at all, since they linked all my scholarships and such to my SSN. However, this year I had to apply for a new PIN and file a completely new FAFSA. (Not my real last names, however this was my real experience.)

OP, you really just need to talk with your FA office and ask them what you need to do.

My brother changed his name when he was about halfway through his military career, after his first marriage and two children but before his second.
Reportedly our father ( who died when he was 15), had wanted to change his name from his stepfathers, back to his birth father, and my brother did it to honor him.
Must have been a nightmare of paperwork though.

I didn’t exactly provide the full story. The reason to the change in the last name is due to corrections that had to be done to my ssn.
I have two last names, which I heard is an uncommon thing in America, therefore, an error I was unaware of, occurred. When my ssn was submitted or filed only one last name was provided and the second last name became a part of my middle name. I needed to correct this error and put that I do in fact have two last names. As a result, my last name changed becoming not one but two.
But the thing is, the information I provided to both the UC and FAFSA was what was on my ssn (which was only one last name), can I fix this error with uc admissions and FAFSA?

If I speak with FAFSA officials and provide documentation will all go well?
Will this affect the financial help I am to receive at my uc?
Who must I first contact about this change FAFSA or the UC. If I contact FAFSA first will the uc then be unable to locate my processed FAFSA?

So complicated.

Sorry if what I wrote is unclear.

FaFSA and the schools need your legal name.
Use the name on your SS#.
If you want to change the name associated with your social security number, you will need to do that first.
