Hello! I was wondering what happens after you submit your application online to the university (ie common app / other online application). How would I know if my teachers' recommendations (sent by post) have successfully reached the university? I mean.. will the university contact me if it hasn't received the necessary documents by a certain date? I'm kind of worried about my local postal service. Thanks.

does the website have a checklist or something? usually it lets you track your application’s status

The applicant is supposed to have put in self addressed postcards with the
reccs that get sent back to your GC- that is one way to know. Some schools
like MIT do not bother to send back the postcards but have an efficient online system
that you can refer to.

Some other schools neither send back the postcards nor update their online system so
you are basically going to have to stress until late January. At taht time even these
colleges will leyt you know something is missing but give you less than a week to get
back with the material (usually end up faxing it).

Oh, so meaning that if something doesn’t get there, they will eventually contact me for it?

If you have applied EA it would not hurt to send in a casual e-mail
checking that everything is there- keep the inquiry low key. H, P
and Caltech are nice in following up in these cases as is MIT. Calling
in about a week after deadlines is also reasonable.

You may not hear back from some other top schools even after your
e-mail- this just goes with the process. Do not fret, it will eventually
resolve itself.

Oh, thanks a lot :)

I’m applying early to Stanford so I guess I shall send in an email a while after the deadline to check.
