I applied to a few UC's as a Computer Science major, and I'll finish all the required classes this semester.

I'm having a lot of trouble with my Discrete Mathematics class. It's online, so there's no instructor to answer my questions, and finding a study group on campus is difficult. And proofs, oh dear God. Writing proofs is killer. I will probably find a tutor soon to help me, though.

I'm just not sure if I can go through with this class. I mean, I've gotten B's and A's in Calculus 1, 2, 3, Linear Algebra, and A's in all my CS classes. I have my **** together and I know how to study, but my confidence with the Discrete class is low. I might be able to get through it with a C, but that's still risky. I'm gonna fight through this class until the very drop date, and if I'm not passing then good-bye.

So, out of curiosity. Let's say I get admitted to some UC, but I drop Discrete. Despite having everything else finished, can they still rejected me on that reason alone?

You get accepted on the basis that you complete the pre-reqs for your course…the other is not mandatory, but the pre-reqs are. You WILL DEFINITELY be rescinded if you drop the course. No question about it (unless it was a special circumstance, but this isn’t).

I’ve heard a lot of people get rejected because they dropped a prereq course. Some guy at my cc dropped the same class you are having trouble with and got rejected from UCSC. He now has to stay 1 more year just to take discrete math again. You’re going to have to study your ass off and pass that class.

I would at least try and aim for a B =/ If you can’t maintain a 3.0 or considerably drop your GPA, they might rescind or ask you to send in an explanation as to why that happened.

I’m still going to do my best in the course, and aim AT LEAST for a B. I will probably pass the course, but I’m not sure with which specific grade. I have a 3.2 gpa right now, and I’m quite confident that even if things go south, my gpa won’t drop below 3.0

Well if you get admitted to a UC right now and drop a prereq you might get rescinded, they usually send you something that you must maintain a C or higher in the classes you are already enrolled in. So if you are already admitted just maintain a C or better and SIR instead of risking getting rescinded.
