What happens if I lie to college and say I'm a URM?

I'm Asian (Bengali) but I can pass myself off as an Hispanic because I'm light-skinned and look like a Columbian, etc.

How will colleges (IVY) ever know?

Can't I say that I'm half-hispanic or something?

Although I'm not going to do this, I'm just curious?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

**NOTE: This is a SERIOUS topic.

You could technically do it, but you would have to make sure that any forms sent to the school (i.e. transcripts, etc.) do not have race on them. But remember if you get caught, your admissions could be rescinded.

here is what happens:
if they find out, they'll send you on an exchange program to Isreal or Iraq and killl you with an AK47 :D, it happened to a friend of a friend of mine, his name was Ming, and he said he was an african american :(
so do it at your own risk :D

Sooner or later, college authorities will come across some record, document, news article, or someone who knew you previously that will indicate you were NOT previously part Hispanic.

BTW, skin color is NOT any indication of ethnicity anymore, as "urm's" come in all shades, complexions, hair textures, accents, etc.

And ethnicity doesn't provide any guaranteed admission anyway.

I agree. Never judge a person by his appearance. Judge him by his life experiences. That's the distinction which separates everyone from each other in a particular minority group. People are people no matter which ethnic group they belong to.

Sorry, SplinterCell50.
Sam Fisher, and the rest of the folks at Third Echelon, would have to terminate the application... with extreme prejudice.

Remember, I said the APPLICATION, not the APPLICANT !

Just had to get that non-academic comment out of my system. (Sorry, and Yes, All Splinter Cell games have been longtime favorites.)

you would be screwing someone else over

and your name would probably be of asian origin rather than a mexican or hispanic name.

Psh. You are ridiculous. You "look like a Columbian." @_@ Jeez. If you can't get into college without doing something as low as that, you are not going to succeed in life. Some people on this board are really pathetic. It's getting irritating. Will you be whining about that B in AP Calc your freshman year as well? What about that measly 2200? Grow the **** up.
I don't think you realize that going to Ivy college doesn't= success in life. Seriously. If you think that going to a college you've never been to for its brand name will earn you eternal happiness AT ALL, then you are delusional.
Anyway, you try to pull that pathetic crap and it is a guaranteed rescinded admission, plus they'll probably relay that information to other colleges. So unless you want to flip burgers, don't do it.

The OP said he was just curious, I'm quite curious whether adcoms do any background checks on people myself.

Social Security Number?

yeah, i heard about a kid who got into an ivy league by putting down that he was hispanic (he's asian) and they caught him using the social security number.
in regards to summerskter's snappy response, the OP was asking for it when he posted this question. not everyone is going to respond nicely.

Ha I was right! [does the victory dance]

How can they tell by SSN?

It's part of your application for all schools that I've seen

Yeah, I understand that applications may ask for your social security number, but how does the SSN itself give away your ethnicity?

There is an urban legend (net hoax) that the middle digit of the ssn identifies ethnicity. It's total crap !!!
