that is, if I suddenly decide to attend another university?

You will lose your deposit (and perhaps a great education). If you made a deposit at another university as well, you may have your admission rescinded at both.

is it up to the other university to decide whether my admission should be rescinded?

and thanks for the reply
actually I'm going to u of chicago almost for sure
just curious
lol

Actually, this issue is so common, it has a name: summer melt.

Unlike issues surrounding admissions ED, there are really no moral issues here. Universities keep wait lists open as long as necessary just to address situations like this.

yes, you lose the deposit. And, at the new institution, you will likely get the dregs of housing etc. But, it is your college career, and you should be able to make such decisions.

Think of it this way:

Very few students have not committed to SOME school by May 1, which is when wait lists open up. So, any school using a wait list, and they all do so, must know that each student to which they offer a spot is forfeiting a deposit somewhere else. It would be quite a double standard to offer spots off the wait list to attend, while penalizing students who forfeit deposits to attend elsewhere under the same circumstances.

thanks, newmassdad !!
