I can't make it to orientation tomorrow, one of the reasons is because I live too far and have other very important commitments, does that mean we have to register for classes later? Is orientation that essential? Kinda sucks, because I was hoping to get my classes registered early so I don't have to hassle myself this fall and take the left over classes, btw I'm a transfer student. I just wished they had orientation on weekends since I take summer classes too.

I didn’t go to orientation, it’s really no biggie. You can just take your picture for your ID during Welcome Week (week before school starts) and sign up for classes at a later time.

Yeah I know orientation is optional but I’m worried I won’t be able to sign up for classes as they will be filled up

Do they know you attended or not? Why not try to enroll in classes on your orientation day?

i asked santa cruz what happens if you dont attend cuz my friend is in china and cant go… they said that people who sign up for orientation get an assigned enrollment date which is their orientation date. if you dont go to orientation then you wont get that enrollment date and will have to sign up for classes last with all the other students who didnt go to orientation. but if you signed up for orientation and paid for it… you should be able to sign up for classes lol.

Hey Jonathuang, really? I paid for it, how will I get the info about my enrollment date? I just couldn’t make it, also since I’m a transfer student how would I know what classes to take, and what courses I’ve taken prior to transfer would give me credit?

If it’s in the system that you’re paid up for orientation then it will let you enroll early. The computer doesn’t know whether you’re actually at orientation or not. It should tell you your enrollment date on your UCSC portal, and if for some reason it doesn’t, try 12 noon on the day you were supposed to have orientation. Though if you’re in China, I’m not sure how that would work out.

oh i meant i would sign up for my friend while hes in china so i asked them. your portal should list your time and date… which should be the time you would do it if youre actually at orientation. basically they dont know if you are there.

bumblebee you should ask some transfers about that or an advisor. but look at [Welcome to ASSIST](http://www.assist.org) to see all of the courses that transfer over.
