What happens if you dont fulfill IGETC before transferring?

I went to a CSU my freshman year and really did not like it, so I finished up one full year there and my sophomore year(now) I came to Moorpark JC to take a minimum of 30 units there so I would be eligible to transfer to a UC. Only thing is this made me ineligible for any TAGs and I havent completely finished the IGETC, and I told the schools this on my app and I have gotten into UCR, UCSB and UCSD so far. If I dont have IGETC finished before I transfer, will I have to complete lower division GEs at the UC I transfer to?

from my understanding igetc is a general ed curriculum that is usually mistaken as "REQUIRED" when its only "RECOMMENDED." i can't remember where I read that the purpose of igetc is so that you end up transferring into your major and starting your major when you get there, and when you dont have igetc finished you will have to complete the specific UC's GE distribution requirements once you are there(or what is left needed to complete).

the igetc is not difficult to finish you could finish it all probably during the summer, just make sure wherever you end up transferring understands you'll take summer classes too(if youw ant to do this)

liek0806 - has got it down.

not exactly. I think all UC's require igetc to be completed at the end of spring term.

None of you has it down.

IGETC is recommended as a way to finish one's general ed requirements, and is one of the many patterns one can utilize to do so and graduate on time upon transferring and is oftentimes not a requirement.

However, it is a requirement sometimes. For example, the College of Letters and Science at UC Berkeley requires IGETC to be finished, or for you to complete four courses in certain areas plus two years of foreign language.

So really this depends on your major-- some majors require IGETC (or the other GE pattern) and many others don't.

IGETC is not required but it is a recommended pathway to finishing lower division GE's. It says it right on the form.

I'm a business administration major and I'm not following IGETC, I was exempt from taking ENG1A, so I took ENG1B which is the only English course required for my major at UCLA (Business Econ) and UCB. I also called the counselors at UCLA and UCB and they told me that it is okay that you didn't finish IGETC, as long as you have the min 60 transferable units and are closing in on finishing the prereq's.

(Pasadena City College - Transfer Center - IGETC Requirements) - that's my cc's IGETC which is similar to most ccc's.

nickthecoolest - somewhat. Certain majors really just need to fulfill which ever prereqs are required for their major. EX. English majors would need to finish the Area 1 portion, Foreign Language portion, and their additional prereqs depending on school.

No, not somewhat-- exactly as it is.

Here is an example of a major where you would have to fulfill IGETC if you didn't follow the other path:

"By the end of the spring term preceding fall enrollment at Berkeley,
you must complete either:

1) The L&S Requirements in Reading & Composition, Foreign Language, and
Quantitative Reasoning; OR
2) IGETC "

Note the definitive MUST.

Granted, many can finish the L&S requirements using other means besides IGETC (as I'm sure the OP will do), but if you don't, IGETC is the only other option left.

Hope that helps.

I should have said "for those that are doing IGETC, it must be done by the end of spring"

:)
