What happens if you fail to clear your first semester at college?

I am currently an international student on F1 visa. Due to a recent family emergency I missed a number of classes and now have to take No Credit in 2 subjects. I explained my situation to all my professors as well as the International Programs department and they said that NC would be best as compared to withdrawing from the course, although this would significantly pull my GPA down. I am still registered for 12 units which is the minimum number required to sustain my visa status. However, I'm worried about not being able to return next semester.

If you have 12 units and are getting a C and above, you’re in compliance with the terms of your visa. There would be no reason for you to have a problem returning. However, you’re no longer on track to graduate in 4 years and will need to take summer classes or “double up” at some later point.
