I'm just curious, this never happened to me.

if you are under 21 and get caught drinking in dorms/school apartments by your RA, whoever else in charge, what happens? Did this happen to anybody?

most places u get written up, like USC, u just get written up and have to do some stupid essay or some dumb arbitrary punishment.

^pretty much

You're done like dinner. In a nutshell, it's what rugby said

You definately get written up and they'll tell your parents.

they won't tell your parents, ur over 18.

In my dorm, they weren't too strict about it. I had an empty bottle of vodka on my floor and my RA came in looked at it, said "I SHOULD report you for that... but whatever. Throw it away," and left. The only time anyone got kicked out for it was this one guy got kicked out (and arrested), but that was because he had been smoking pot along with drinking in his room, and someone smelled the pot and reported him to the Hall Director. Usually, for JUST alcohol, you just get a fine or something and have to pour it out/throw it away, if they decide to enforce it strictly.

The RAs have definitely had to help drunk people to their rooms (myself included, once, and I deeply apologized the next day) though, and they've never done anything but be mad at us for a few days afterward about it. They made this kid clean the whole lobby once when he threw up in it though from drinking so much.

punkdudeus is right. You'll probably get written up and have to write an essay, may have to have a meeting with campus judicial affairs, sit through an alcohol awareness slide show (at my school, it's all three).

This is also what happens if you happen to be in the same room as people who are drinking even if you aren't (it happened to me).

Also, they almost certainly will NOT contact your parents. You're an adult so you have a right to privacy. This is why parents are able to get a copy of your grades from the school without your permission.

Some things vary from campus to campus, but I believe that the privacy thing is an across the board thing.

Basically, just don't drink in the dorms (albeit, if you get caught, the punishment wouldn't be as bad as if you got caught by a cop in a bar/party/etc.)

my RA used to stick his head in during parties on our floor and tell us that he didn't want to drive anyone to the hospital. that was pretty much the extent of his monitoring.

Well, that shows how little I know about getting caught in the dorm with alcohol. I have friends who got violations for it this past year, and one of them talked about how she fought about it with her mom. I just assumed the school told her because I don't think she would volunteer the information. But it's true that you are entitled to privacy. But I am sure that if university police gets involved, you get a small fine and have some kind of student court order, because alcohol in the dorms is a big no-no.

Depends. At my school, security will tell you to put your drink down if you're at a party. If you're in your room with a couple people, security has about a .005% chance of walking by at any given time... and even if they did and it was your first time to get in trouble, they'd just write your name up. Three times and you have to talk to a dean I think.

And does anyone else think thats kind of lame to rat someone out for smoking pot?

My school doesn't care. though RA's do do rounds, but they usually dont care. Its the children they care bout, the freshman who act like idiots.

The housing people at my school would [have a fit] if we had parties in the dorms, oh man. I can only imagine. Technically, we have a dry campus (I say technically because all the frats, while technically on campus, are allowed to have alcohol in their houses although it's supposed to be only 21+, pfft as if) so there are supposed to be strict punishment for drinking, but I've never really heard of anyone getting in trouble too bad for it. Our RAs aren't allowed to go through our mini fridges or closets, so as long as the booze is out of sight you are fine (and if it's not, it's your own damn fault for getting caught).

Also, ephrhymeswbeef, I think if you're stupid enough to smoke pot in a dorm of all places you could go, you deserve anything you get from being caught with it. For christ's sake, go SOMEWHERE else. There are a million places besides the freakin dorm basement to smoke pot at.

Kind of off topic...but does RA stand for?

resident advisor

Resident advisor, it's a usually a sophmore or junior who lives on your floor, will pull on a stuck window, talk to loud neighbors, give you the master key when you lock yourself out of your room, ect. They do it in exchange for free room and board.

As for our school, you basically get "written up" if you get caught by a RA or a RSO (resident security officer). Not a big deal the first few times though; we just met with the reslife dean, took an Alcohol 101 computer thing, got a "warning."

If you get written up too many times, for whatever reason, you can get kicked out. We had a kid who got written up for smoking (not cigarrettes), alcohol, and whatever else, and he did get kicked out halfway through the year after getting written up like 19 times.

For your own school, just check the policy and ask around.

resident advisor

Thanks Fsu-Ru, frostburg2010, and hswrestling07 :)

Haha, you guys go to funny schools.

At my school, there is no such thing as a write up, and if you called someone to report the smell of marijuana smoke they'd probably laugh at you.

Drinking is done openly and Residence Counselors are only not allowed to drink with their freshman. Smoking, while often done in a closed room and is a bit less open, still won't land you in any trouble.

The only time it's an issue is if you're outside, in which cause if a DPS officer sees you they'll ask you to spill out your drink.

But the truth is-- policy is different everywhere, and very few places you're going to get into any serious trouble because most schools realize that policing drinking is just more likely to drive students off campus where the university can't guarantee or provide any safety measures and more incidents are likely to happen.
