What exactly happens to a deferred application?

Is it totally reconsidered, re-read by two new readers and goes through the exact same process as a RD app? Or do they use the same reading summaries as for EA and simply consider the app in committee again?

How does new materials factor in? How long does a deferred applicant have to update his application?

There are two views concerning deferred applicants. One is that they have an advantage in the RD round since they have shown so much interest in the college. The other is that they have a disadvantage because the college has already seen them and decided not to take them. Depending on the college, it probably tends to lean in either direction. However, a logical reason for being deferred is that the applicant was very good, but that they want more information such as later SAT scores or the senior mid-year grade report. I think it is safe to say that the application can be updated until the regular deadline, but you can continue to send info even after that. They wouldn't reread the essays.
