What if lets say, an applicant gets accepted a prviate, expensive college such as Princeton but in his excitement and dedication to his app, he completely forgot about the financial aid portion? Would the colleges give him another chance even though the deadline is way past since he got accepted, or would he have to choose a different college to go to since he cannot afford it? Just curious...

I can only speak about Stanford, but EA applicants who did not file by the Nov. 15 deadline can still apply without penalty. Their estimates just comes later than normal. However, I’m not sure if regular applicants fair the same. On their website, Stanford states they still accept late submissions, but your aid might be diminished from what it would be if you filed on time.

The question about missed deadlines is asked a lot. Call Princeton and ask them. Tell them you forgot to file the financial aid forms on time.

I just have to say…I find it remarkable that students SMART enough to get accepted to Princeton are not smart enough to read the deadlines for financial aid application forms to be completed…especially when applying early (if you’ve already heard from Princeton, you applied early). I know…you are busy finishing your senior year, doing other things like community service, working a job, etc. BUT really…you found the deadline for your application. Why didn’t you look for the deadline for financial aid?

OK…off of my soapbox but I had to get that off my chest.

no no, it’s not me. i’ve submitted all of my FA in by deadline. and its not just princeton either, i was just using that as an example. i actually do know someone that does. and i mean for RD not EA/ED.

The schools set deadlines for reasons. They need time to process the applications so they can send them out in a timely fashion. Your “friend” should call their school to find out what to do regarding a missed deadline. The school will probably tell them to submit ASAP. If it’s for a regular decision deadline…the finaid deadline is probably not yet missed. Unless its an unusual college, regular decision REGULAR deadlines are not until after Jan 1. There ARE priority deadlines for certain competitive scholarships and the like…and truthfully, if someone misses THOSE deadlines, I would suspect they are not in the running for that particular scholarship.

Seriously…Every student should check the financial aid section of the schools’ websites to find out what forms are required AND the deadlines for submission. AND then get them in on time.

I work at a state U that enforced FA deadlines for the first time this year. We promised our students who applied before the deadline a certain level of funding, and if they applied on time they got it. We ran out of money early, and a lot of students who COULD have had institutional funding did not get it because they didn’t apply on time. Of course, many students would not have received any of the institutional funding, anyway, because their EFCs were too high. In that case, it was no bit deal for them. Stafford loans are always available, as are Pell grants (if you qualify).
