I'm an incoming freshman, and according to mybarc I'll be getting a triple. I need to triple up becuase of my finances. What happens when a roommate detriples? Do the two other roommates get charged for a double or triple for the rest of the year? I'd imagine we would get charged as a double, but is there anyway to like retriple? Like I said, I need a triple, is there anything I can do about this?

Relating to my daughter who’ll begin this fall as an incoming freshman, she was put in a tripple after requesting a double. From what I’ve been told by UCSB’s Housing Dept. at 805-893-2760, if you are in a tripple and then end up as a double (because one of the roommates moved out), you will be charged as a double if someone else doesn’t move in to make it back into a tripple. However, you may choose to re-tripple if that happens here at this link: [de-tripple/re-tripple link](http://appl.housing.ucsb.edu/HousingApplications/detriple/detriple.aspx).

In fact, this link makes you login with your user account and you can do one of four things there. You can choose to 1) de-tripple, 2) re-tripple, 3) cancel re-tripple, 4) cancel de-tripple.

This link is hard to get into sometimes(i.e., you may get a message that the sight is down or some other message saying you can’t get in right now), but I’ve gotten into it several times, after failing several times, by re-trying every few minutes. I got into it just now in fact so that I could accurately describe that webpage for this post.

What’s disturbing is that there is no guarantee after you submit your request to re-tripple. You may get stuck as a double for a while so I guess you may really have to budget for the more expensive scenario just in case you end up as a double. It’s all still sort of confusing to me how they’ll pro-rate the billing between the time you’re a tripple and the time you’re a double if you experience both situations in your room.

Call the number above and ask them to see if you get a different answer than I did from them.

Good luck!

chance is that they might not even de-tripple you. There was a triple in my floor, and I was in a double. My roommate moved out so technically i was in a single paying the price of a double muhahaha. And the RA didn’t even de-tripple my floormates to put one of them in my room. My other friend had a single for the same reason and she never got another roommate even though there were some triples in the dorm. so don’t worry too much, it is a hustle for the housing people to switch people around, and my RA told me that once it reaches spring quarter basically everything is set and they won’t make any changes regarding rooming.

I lived in Anacapa and my advice is if your roommate detriples then IMMEDIATELY look for a new roommate because they will charge you for a doubles price (unless if its near the end of the semester) but regardless look for one immediately. However most important part is to MAKE SURE YOU GET YOUR RA TO GET THE PAPERWORKS through ASAP because my new roommate moved in but slacked off in getting the papers done so me and my other roommate got charged for a double anyways until the paperworks went through
