what happens when...

What does your grad program (or others you've heard about) do in cases where a new grad student gets below a 3.0 gpa for his/her first semester of grad school? Let's assume that student has a grad assistantship and is expected to keep up at least a B average.
(I don't plan on this happening to me, but I've wondered how schools deal with it.)
Does the department typically put the student on probation for a semester to see if he/she can raise the gpa? Does he/she get to keep the assistantship during that time?

you know i have done A LOT of reading on grad schol expectations, and behaviors, etc... and from what i have gathered, if the trend persists of low grades then you will loose your assistanceship. but since you are working sooo closely with a professor(s) i think it would be really hard to achieve low grades. but if you do-- i think that personal relationship with the faculty will let you slide for one semester, but definately not 2.

good luck!
