What happens with financial aid if child received SSD

I may have my son apply for SSD (he has a disability). I was told for him to continue to receive Medical Assistance, he has to apply for SSD. Is he considered emancipated and no longer my dependent and if so, how will he qualify for financial aid and what may he be required to pay out of pocket. I am trying to determine which would help him better.

No. Receiving SSD will have no impact on your son’s dependency status for financial aid purposes. What would make you think that?

Because he is receiving SSD and independent, over 18, he will no longer be considered my dependent, will he? Will the SSD be considered as income for him? I have never received SSD for him, since he was diagnosed because I made to much. That is why I really don’t know how his going for SSD will impact his financial eligibility and dependency on me for financial aid.

No, being over 18 and receiving SSD does not make him independent for FAFSA. A student has to be 24 or over or meet one of the other criteria listed in FAFSA to be considered independent for FA purposes. Receiving SSD is not one of the criteria for independence on FAFSA. When he applies for FA, parent income and assets will have to be reported.

Student income and assets must also be reported. But untaxed SS benefits are not reportable income on FAFSA.

This is what is taken into account when determining independence for federal financial aid.

This form applies to the July 1, 2013 - June 30, 2014 school year.

After looking it up, looks like it may be SSI he gets. Guess I won’t know til I have him apply. Just don’t want him to not be able to attend college and I am a single mom with no help from his father. He does get assistance from OVR too.
