I'm currently a sophomore at UC Berkeley but I'm originally from a Southern state. I decided the social atmosphere and the long distance from home really have made me unhappy here, so I'm looking to transfer to get a better college experience. I'm most likely going to transfer to my home state's flagship university but I'm also considering UVA.

Current students, what has your experience been like so far? What do you do on a typical weekend? Are you happy? How would you describe the typical UVA student? How are the clubs on campus? Do you enjoy your classes? What is the overall atmosphere?

I’m a transfer student, so I’ve only been here a month but I’ll chime in. I’m still as obsessed with UVA as I was when I got here. I usually go out one or two nights a weekend (Thursday or Friday). I also went to the first football game, which was an awesome experience.

Clubs have been great too! I’m in a few organizations on grounds, all of which meet once a week. Additionally, they will throw parties every few weekends for members. Self-governance was something my tour guide stressed when I first came to visit, but it really is something else! I’m part of a political student group, and the exec board arranges for different Virginia representatives to come speak every week. Students really take charge to get things done.

I’m enjoying most of my classes. One is not my strongest subject, and the professor is a little kooky, but the rest of mine are great. Lectures are anywhere from 60-200 students for me, but discussions are only 20. For me, it’s the best of both worlds. I have a chance to just take notes and process them at my own pace over the week, but then I’m prepared to have more one on one interaction in discussion.

I couldn’t begin to describe an “overall” atmosphere. There are a lot of different people here. I would say there is a little bit of pressure to conform to a certain style, but I’ve seen everything. Greek life is popular but not overbearing if you’re not involved. I would say that UVA has something for everyone.
