list the schools

My D turned down UCSD and Bucknell University.

I'm turning down UC.. Irvine, Santa Barbara, Santa Cruz.. so far all that I've gotten responses from! I think only Irvine is higher ranked, but you get the picture (:

I turned down USC and UCSD. I love UC Davis and knew it wasn't worth the $ to go to USC and I think UCD will be close to (if not catch) UCSD in the rankings by 2010.

I'm about 90% sure I'm attending Davis, so I would be turning down:

UC Berkeley
UCLA
UCSD
UCSB

Who says Irvine is above Davis???

Collegemom:

If you judge by the almighty US News and World Report yes, Irvine is ranked 40, and Davis, 48. But anybody in the college biz will tell you those ratings aren't the say all and be all of a college's reputation. And, given, according to the Princeton Review's data, UC Irvine had a higher average SAT than Davis.

However, I'll be interested to see the stats for this admission season. It seemed that Irvine admitted many more students than last year given by the fact that way more people were admitted to Irvine than Davis at my school.

Regardless, they both have their pros and cons.

UC Davis officials misreported the amount of faculty that had Ph.D's, which lowered our ranking. From The California Aggie (UC Davis's Newspaper):
http://media.www.californiaaggie.co...gepublisher.com
and in fact some rank UC Davis 17th overall ahead of some IVYs and right behind Harvard... http://www.washingtonmonthly.com/fe...llegeguide.html

even if davis didnt screw up their ranking they would be ranked 42

Yes but Davis has:
D1 football
a college town environment
one of the best intramural programs in the country
one of the best internship programs in the country
a diversified campus
is the only UC with 5 professional schools ( med, law, business, educ, vet med)
Has the most acreage of any UC
and is located in Nor Cal > So Cal :)
a diversified campus
This is practically a given at UCs...
Your point being?
I think Merced surpasses UCD. Either way, so what? Cal State Northridge has more acreage than UCLA. Is CSUN better than UCLA?
and is located in Nor Cal > So Cal
Penn is in West Philly. I'd still choose Penn over UCD.

Also an aggressive plan for the future
http://www.davisenterprise.com/articles/2005/08/09/news/2020/2020part3.txt

D1 football = fun
a college town environment = great place to live
one of the best intramural programs in the country = more fun and stress reliever
one of the best internship programs in the country = opportunities
a diversified campus = better atmosphere
is the only UC with 5 professional schools ( med, law, business, educ, vet med) = opportunities for research/collaboration/exposure/inspiration
Has the most acreage of any UC = UC-Davis -- 5993 acres
UC-Merced -- 2000 acres + 20K-25K acres reserved for conservation
UC-Santa Cruz -- 2000 acres
UC-San Diego -- 1976 acres
UC-Irvine -- 1477 acres
UC-Berkeley -- 1232 acres
UC-Riverside -- 1200 acres
UC-Santa Barbara -- 989 acres
UC-Los Angeles -- 419 acres
and is located in Nor Cal > So Cal

collegemom,

You seem to be insinuating that a "diversified campus" is exclusive to Davis in this case. Clearly, if we look only at the stats, all the UCs provide exceptionally diverse campuses.

How does having a vet school help me if I have no plans on going to vet school? Furthermore, are you going to say that UCD is providing better opportunities than Cal and UCLA by virtue of having an extra professional school?

Again...SO WHAT?!
and is located in Nor Cal > So Cal
Why?

Too much hostility in this thread...

Well, I think that Davis is an underrated, undervalued school. But for very different reasons. Collegemom needs to give good reasons for her criteria, or she's just not doing the school justice.

^
you rock! way to go! i wonder why she is so sensitive and wouldn't accept some truths about ucd so i just stopped arguing with her cuz it's just useless. she also needs to give a "source" to why nor cal>so cal, haha. i'm going to UCD myself but i'm really realistic about my future school.

Umm. I like Nor Cal a LOT more than So Cal. So Cal is cheesy, hokey, Disneylandish... it's just a wayyy different culture, and I find it corny. Obviously collegemom and I share the same OPINION. Relax, UCLAri/blueprints. You're welcome to disagree with her, but don't get upset about it. Everyone has their own criteria in evaluating a school.

actually it's more like the other way around. she is upset with my opinions and especially those who say uci is better than ucd. she will snap when you say that.

inpltclycorrect,

I love this. "It's my opinion, therefore you can't criticize it! Nyah!" Sorry, but opinions can be poorly constructed, and even wrong. If I said, "It's my opinion that the EU is doing a good job of attracting Eastern European members," I'd be flat out wrong, based on current events.

This particular statement is not flat out wrong, but it skirts the line, to be sure.

Really though, I never understood this argument, personally. Yes, there is plenty of "Hollywood" in Southern California, but let me turn on my caps for a second:

NOT ALL OF SO CAL IS HOLLYWOOD.

San Diego, which is very obviously in Southern California, is as different from Hollywood as Las Vegas is from Boston. Even LA proper offers the so-called "high society member" plenty of wonderful resources to stay pompous. But the blanket statement of "SO CAL IS DUMB LOLZ!" always strikes me as silly and uneducated.

Now, don't get me wrong, I love Northern California. I find the Bay Area to be captivating, beautiful, and a treat to visit. But for different reasons. Both offer different things. One is not necessarily better than the other.

For example, if I happen to enjoy surfing, why would Nor Cal be better?
