Hi! I have a question: I have some health problems that may interfere with school, but I'm going to attend college anyway and hope that they don't get in the way. Let's say that my problems got so bad that I could no longer attend. Now what happens as far as the cost of attending school goes? If I go to a $40K/year university, and I have to drop out after 2 or 3 months, do I still have to pay the full $40K?

You only pay the costs you've incurred. Room and board for the time you're there, tuition for the courses you took, etc.

Not true. Most schools have withdrawal policies - you generally have to pay for the full semester if you've been there for 2 or 3 months.

You may be able to get tuition insurance to cover this possibility.

Yes, I said tuition, etc for the courses you'd taken etc. The OP asked if they would be forced to pay for the full year even if they were only there for a part of the first semester. I've never heard of a school that charged for Winter/Spring semester if you completely withdrew during Fall and never started second semester courses.

In the OP's case, it may make sense to investigate tuitition reimbursement insurance.
