Hi I am a rising Junior, and I really want to get into UPenn Wharton School. I was wondering if anyone could help me and tell me what else I need, or if I'm on the right track (or not) to get into UPenn. Thanks!!!!

1900 SAT
30 ACT
AP Statistics (3), I haven't gotten to take my other APs, I expected to take 7 or 8 by the end of HS
Congressional Scholarship to study abroad (CBYX) in Germany for a year
Cadet 2nd/Lt. in Civil Air Patrol (similar to JROTC)
Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do
Tennis and Cross Country
3.9 GPA

If you are currently in the 10th grade, there is some hope… That being said, you should have at least 3 to 4 AP exams taken by the end of your Junior year, and get at least a 4 on all of them (you gotta get some 5’s too). You need subject tests (2) and you should aim for anything above a 750. Your SAT needs to jump to at least a 2150 to be competitive (at least being used very strongly here), and your ACT should be around a 32-33 (again at least). You should start joining clubs pertaining to business (if that’s what you’re really interested in)… they aren’t just going to take good students that want the fastest path to cash, they are going to take excellent students that love business. If you have to fake it, you, in all likelihood, will not pass their rigorous filter process, where they filter out kids that are excellent students but have no interest in pursuing business for any reason but money. They can just tell through your EC’s and essays, so if that’s the case, don’t bother. If 3.9 is your unweighted GPA, you are in good standing with regards to that… of course it depends on your school. If you go to a school that has a strong profile with Penn, or a history of being very competitive and getting kids in, then that is great. I hate when people say GPA doesn’t matter, when in fact, the director of admissions at Penn told me personally that grades matter the most to them (this was self-evident to me… they all say that). Of course, if your school is unknown, has a mediocre school profile, and is obviously very easy in terms of grade inflation (they can tell by the difference between your AP class grades and your exam grades), they are less likely to at all consider your grades. They will look instead at your class rank. If you are from a state like North Dakota, or Montana, or any state really in the middle of nowhere, you have a good shot. They need geographical diversity, and for the 3rd year in a row, not a single student from Montana applied. So yeah, you need to boost those test scores, and you need to acquire more, and stronger EC’s. Get a leadership role in one or two of them, and make sure you really like it.

Thanks! I’m from VA, so I am sure that there many applicants from there. Does fluency in a language help? I’m fluent in German too.

The only kids that Ivy League colleges seriously consider for acceptance are kids who have excelled in something to a high degree. Whether it be music, sports, etc., Ivies generally look for people who have distinguished themselves on a state, national, or international level in whatever they have done. That is, above the strong academics and SAT scores (if you have even a 2200 you’re pretty good). However, grades and regular EC’s (even with leadership) are not enough to get seriously considered for UPenn. You have to enter serious, large-scale competitions in whatever it is you like and distinguish yourself in them.

Much, much higher SAT. I was waitlisted with a 2330.

Improve your SAT score, take AP exams and partake in more ECs.
