What if I ask for a rec too early?

I am thinking about applying to Cornell Aem for spring 2011, the deadline is is october.

Yet, should I ask him for a recommendation now, or wait until around july? Should I just let him know that I will need it come october time?

How does it work if you intend to also apply for fall 2011 (stern and possibly columbia)?

Definitely give professors a heads up a little while in advance–but don’t expect them to remember months from now. Think of this as time to further develop your relationship with them!

Oh also, I think it’s nice to ask them in person rather than via email, it gives you an opportunity to talk about your reasons for transfer right away. So stop by their office if you can!

I asked for a letter of rec almost a year in advance. I spoke to my prof in April/ May '09 to apply as a transfer for Fall '10. We met several times and talked about the process. I gave him all of the forms in November. It worked out great.
