I'm going to be in Montana for the entire summer, and don't really want to fly back in late June/July for orientation (a ticket from Butte, MT to LGA or JFK is $700 round trip that time of year). Do I really have to? Are there any alternatives?

Actually, the letter I recieved said they won't give us more information until May. By then, a plane ticket could cost over $2000. :-/

2000? are you kidding?

I don't think orientation is required, but it's better if you go. If I were you, I would just move to NYC a bit early and chill in the city for a couple of days before class starts. I thought orientation was in August and not June/July?

Oh, this letter I got said for CAS its late June/early July, but I heard it's possible to attend a later orientation in August. I dunno.

But yeah, $2000 on short notice. As to how short, I don't know exactly. With over a month's notive the ticket is roughly $700. Flying from Butte to Salt Lake City or Seattle is $400, and then another $300 into the city. The plan out of Butte is in a little 15-20 seat propeller plane. Pretty cool, but expensive :D

Actually, according to this link their latest orientation is in the middle of July. I hope they offer an alternative time for placement testing...

My bad. I should have read my acceptance packet before saying that it's in August.

Most schools are in August, so I assumed that NYU was the same.

But I still suggest moving to NYC a couple weeks earlier. It's a fun place to be :)

Very true! I'll probably be there a few days earlier to get settled in myself.

You may not be able to "move in" early - Housing's pretty strict (and sometimes annoying) about dates, so you'll only be able to move into your residence hall when they say so. In other words, don't just show up with your stuff and expect them to show you to your room.

If you can't attend your summer orientation, you can do yours during Welcome Week which is the week after you move in , and before classes start. The only downside to that is that sometimes you'll have greater difficulty registering for classes you want than if you had attended an earlier orientation. They'll tell you that it doesn't happen, but it does.

Also, you can't move in early. Move in day is the last Sunday in August. That's when all freshmen move in.

Its a Delta Airlines (Skywest) CRJ-200 to Salt Lake City. 50 seats. Hardly 15-20 seat propellor plane. There is also Alaska Airlines (Horizon) service to Seattle.

I suggest driving to Helena, Billings, Great Falls, or Bozeman. You can get Montana to NYU $400 easily, even on short notice.

I couldn't make it to summer orientation so I had mine in August/September. The only negative of doing that is that you may not get the classes you want because by then all the good ones are taken. I had to take the most random courses first semester because they were the only ones available. So as long as you're cool with that, it shouldnt matter.

i HIGHLY suggest going to orientation in the summer. i met a lot of friends and learned a lot about what to expect when i moved in in august. also, welcome week was such a fun/relaxing time to get used to being in the city, i cant imagine what i would have done if i had to attend orientation sessions during welcome week. also, registering for classes is so stressful, i would have hated to leave it til the last second. i understand that money is most likely an issue for a lot of ppl, but if you can make it work then i HIGHLY suggest attending one of the summer orientations.
