What if I can't swim?

@dewdrop87: As a transfer, did you take the test before graduation or you just didn’t take the test at all?

Transfers never have to take it. We’re exempt. We’re also exempt from the PE classes.

^^right on

lol, yeah..we rock.

^ No!!! Lol

Do I have to take the test freshman year? I’m sure I can get some swimming lessons in the next four years

hey, i know it was already mentioned above, but just for good measure:

i’m a transfer student from another university, where i didn’t take any PE classes my freshman year. Cornell granted me over 30 transfer credits. does that mean that i am exempt from the PE reqs AND the swim test? i read their course catalog, which supports that, but i also read some cornell sites, which were iffy about the exemptions (i wasn’t sure about who was exempt).

any clarifications for my over-paranoia would be much appreciated, thanks!

@DustBunny: I don’t think the amount of transfer credit matters if you are talking about the PE reqs and swimming test. (correct me if I’m wrong)

“Students who transfer to Cornell from another college or university will be awarded one term of physical education credit for each full term of academic transfer credit they are granted by Cornell. Transfer students entering Cornell as sophomores or juniors are not usually required to take physical education classes for credit. Each student should clarify his or her transfer status with the appropriate college office. Transfer students subject to the credit requirement must take the swim test before signing up for an elective.”

From what I read, I would think.. If you got accepted as a first semester sophomore, then you would have 2 PE credits. I am not sure if every college has the same PE requirements, but for Engineering, we only need 2 PE classes. So, if you already have 2 PE credits, you don’t have to take PE classes anymore. Also, you wouldn’t have to take the swimming test.

Fri3nds04 is right…since you were awarded over 30 transfer credits you are exempt from the swim test and the 2 PE class requirements.

how deep is the “deep end of the pool”?
since i’m afraid of heights and drowning, i think i just might die from heart attack if the pool is 20 ft deep.
i know we are supposed to jump in from the deep end… does it have to be a dive, like head first arms together, or is a cannonball okay?

I think the pool is 13 ft at its deepest. You just need to jump in…no fancy dive necessary. I’ve lifeguarded during the swim tests and surprisingly the difficult part for a lot of people was jumping in…they were just afraid of not being able to come up.

sadly…that’s exactly my fear.
or more specifically, my goggles will pop off (which has happened before) rendering me completely blind in the water and totally freaked out

Well…I think you can pause for a minute to adjust your goggles if they pop off. We let swimmers do that when I guarded. I would also stick my guard tube in the water for the swimmer to jump to and grab on…not sure if you’re allowed to do it during the summer tests.

There were few swimmers in the fall/winter/spring so we had time to do things like that.
