what if i don't want to tell them my race??

i'm white, not an URM or anything....would it work against me in any way to leave the "race" section of my app blank? what are the consequences of this?

check other if you don't want to say. but they'll figure you're white or asian anyway.

It's an optional question. You can leave it blank.

i read somewhere that most people who leave the box blank are asians ( b/c admission is harder for them). so if you leave the box blank, adcoms will probably think that your an asian trying to take the easy way out. however, i don't know how reliable my source was.

What if you're asian and check asian? Do you get bonus points for being honest :p

sorry, i don't think so....You should just check other, then write a city in china like Beijingeese... and they will be like OMG he's from Bangladesh we need him TO COME HERE NOW!

If you aren't Asian, you should tell them your race--it's to your advantage.

what if ur Pakistani? Should u check the asian box? or can u specify?

I just took the risk and marked "Caucasian" but if you don't want to mark it you don't have to.

Unless the college has a low enrollment of Asians, checking Asian is a disadvantage.

Ya but it's not like they're not going to know you're not Asian. Our last names aren't that hard to miss :p

change your name for like a year and then change it back once you're in college.

haha...i wish i could do that but my parents will kill me...apparently last names are very important in Chinese culture.. :(

Or...just change it permanently and escape racial name discrimination for the rest of your life.

The only way to figure out if Anthony Gruber Park is white or Korean is to give him an interview. But, if you gave him an interview, then he must have been a pretty attractive candidate on paper...

You mean are hard to miss?

-yeah I know what you mean. I joked around about that in front of my parents and they got really mad at me lol.

oh plz. are u guys really willing to change ur name just to get into college? If they won't accept u b/c ur asian and its tough to get in or whatever, then its just not the right college for u then.

haha we're just joking.

So MIT, HYPS are unsuitable schools for elite students, right?

I believe he/she meant that an Asian name is easy to recognize. Chou, Zhou, Mao, Kao, Kong, Wu, Wang, Shang, Shi, Xing, Jiang, etc. :)
