the former poster says that that if an "elite" asian applicant did not get into HYPSM because of AA, then those schools are not for him or her. possibly asigzdavincii should've added elite "asian" students to make his point clearer.

hope it clears up the HUH?ness

I believe he/she meant that an Asian name is easy to recognize. Chou, Zhou, Mao, Kao, Kong, Wu, Wang, Shang, Shi, Xing, Jiang, etc.

Lol, Imagine if one of 毛泽东 relatives went to apply to HYP..

the best schools in the country get every asian applying to em, so obviously your race is a enormous disadvantage. Institutional racism whatever

oh plz. are u guys really willing to change ur name just to get into college? If they won't accept u b/c ur asian and its tough to get in or whatever, then its just not the right college for u then.

I’m not concerned that a school won’t accept me because I’m Asian. I’m concerned that a secretary will place my graduate school application into the “international students” pile because of my last name even though I was born here.

will do either the house or senate page program hurt your chances of applying to a school like harvard or princeton because you cant take as many ap classes as you would at your normal high school

pnthrs11, you may get more responses if you start a new thread on this subject, since it's totally off topic.

sorry about that read a differnt thread and posted in this one...

Yeah, well it does suck that its harder for Asians. And that includes Indians as well, though my parents are from Pakistan, but still. But, that still in my opinion doesn't justify changing ones name. It's like me changing my name b/c it sounds obviously Muslim. Unless its something u want to do it for urself (outside of just doing it to just get into college), then its not worth it.

Some kid I know said he'd suck cocck to get a 4.3 GPA (he was Asian btw)....changing your last name is mild to me.

no comment. btw, I'M asian

So, races disadvantaging you are:

Asian, Indian, White- though i HIGHLY doubt that since the US would want to recruit its own countrymen

what if you're like southasian, like from bangladesh--

Columbia University requires you to send or upload a photo to them so either way if you're applying to schools like that they'll still find out your ethnicity

How many times do I have to mention it...Indians are Asians

yes unfortunately you're right...I still cringe when I have to fill in the bubble that says Asian/Pacific Islander...

Uggh. I honestly don't get why colleges are so picky when it comes to choosing a certain number of people for each race. Diversity doesn't necessarily come with one's ethnicity. I think that they should focus on what the person has gone through, and not just assume that all blacks, hispanics, or native americans are poor and disadvantaged. Just my opinion.

nygirl, you're definitely not alone on that belief! :)

yeah seriously... i couldn't agree with you more.

milkie yo, bangladesh is not india.
