What if interviewer lives too far?

Well, I received an offer to have an interview with an alumni from Georgetown University.
All is great right? The only problem is he lives too far!

I live in Victoria, (Vancouver Island) and he lives in "West" vancouver (might be useful information anyone living in BC, Canada)

Apprently if I want to go to West Vancouver I have to ride a plane or the ferry.
By plane it would take about 2 hours and by ferry about 4 hours.
Both way its going to cost me about $300 for round trip. (Maybe less for the ferry)

What should I do? Should I politely ask for a phone interview???
Any suggestions?

Thanks~!

I think that having to pay $300 andfor an interview is a lot of money. You could politely explain that you can't afford the trip, but would be happy to do a phone interview, and you could politely ask if that's possible. Make sure that you emphasize how interested you are in GT, and how much you'd love to talk with an alum about it.

How much would it cost to take the ferry? If it's less than 100 dollars round trip, I think it's worth it.

I think you should suggest a phone interview. As an alumni interview myself for another school, I would certainly understand.

how much is the ferry and can you make the whole thing an adventure? that might be fun, combine somethings....otherwise try for the phone

is it 2 hours each way? and 4 hours each way by ferry?

that's a lot for an interview. I would tell them it's too far/expensive (without it making sound like the interview is not important), and try to get a phone interview.

Well I calculated for the cost for the ferry and it will cost around $160..
Its 2 hours one way by plane and 4 hours one way by ferry T^T..

my first suggestion would be to talk to the interviewer and explain the situation and ask if maybe you could switch interviewers to someone closer ... if not than it looks like the phone or the ferry.

PS - When I was in HS one of my interviews was snowed out and we eventually did the interview by phone ... and I was accepted (to a reach) ... given the circumstances I would think a phone interview would be fine.

I don't know about your financial situation but if it's 160 dollars round trip by ferry, I think it's worth going the distance for your interview. If you go to Georgetown, you'll be paying a lot of money anyways, so i think 160 dollars (Assuming it's round trip) would be a small price to pay to improve your chances of getting in.

I agree with b407... It's a great opportunity for you and trust me, the interviewer will know what you had to do to get to the interview. At the end of the day, it all depends on how much interest you want to show and how hard you want to work to get in. I think a phone interview is ok...but it's sort of the lazy route out of this one. If you want something badly enough, show them you want it..get on the ferry and have fun. You should be looking forward to this experience. If cost is an issue, maybe you should reconsider a attending school in DC...this is just the beginning.

It's possible that the school that set you up with this interviewer is not very familiar with Canadian geography. They may think that Vancouver Island is right next door to Vancouver. I think you should contact the school to see if there is an interviewer who lives on Vancouver Island, or if not, try to arrange a phone interview.

I live in Vancouver, and I think you can take the Pacific Coach (<a href="http://www.pacificcoach.com/%5B/url%5D">http://www.pacificcoach.com/</a>) and it'll only cost $80 + $10 (for bus) for a return trip. Of course you can also take the ferry from Nanaimo -- it would be much more time consuming but I think it would also be quite a bit cheaper.

Hmm.. I guess using the Pacific Coach line is the best solution. (Although time consuming!)
Georgetown is quite my favorite school that I wish to go so I think it is worth while going for.

Actually my university councilor on the other day was all over me stressing about how much it is important that I should go. T^T..

Wish me luck everyone and thanks to all the replies!
Its great to have such many caring feedbacks!
