D received a deferral from one of her two top schools (SantaClaraU). The only thing asked for is 1st semester transcript. D won't have any grades as she's on exchange and they just don't provide them. The best we can do is a list of classes and dates of attendance. HS GC is of no help. Not sure D can provide anything additional. She's been pretty restricted in activities due to her host family situation.

Any suggestions for what she can do? Has already opted for RD. Do you think there's a chance or should she just let that one go? She does have an acceptance at a school that she's very happy with.

She can call or write them a letter, explaining her situation. Writing is best. They’ll put it in her file. Please know that getting accepted after a deferral is highly unlikely anyway.

Not sure if there is anything else you can do, but if I were you I would ask my D if she believes any of her exchange teachers would write a letter of recommendation. Additional recommendations would not be a grade report but they certainly could offer an admissions committee some valuable insight. If D could obtain some recommendations, I would contact Santa Clara to let them know what you are planning to send.
In any event it sounds like your D has a very nice option in hand.
Good Luck.

I agree–ask any exchange teachers who REALLY LIKE your D to write letters of recommendation, explaining the situation and why they like your D to support her application.

Thanks for your suggestions. I think she’s going to stay in the RD pool for now but without anything additional, there’s probably not much chance. Next time we skype I’ll mention asking for letters from teachers there. School let out for the summer on Jan. 7 so I’m not sure if she can contact them.
