what if question

what if i leave my house as soon as i turn 18, how should i apply for financial aid? and on bad terms with my parents, so they won't sign anything?

Living alone or being 18 does not mean anything in terms of financial aid. There are strict criteria for declaring yourself independent for Financial aid and likely you wouldn’t meet the criteria. If your parents won’t sign for anything in terms of loans and you plan to attend a four year school you will have a very difficult time. If you are wiling to work full time to support yourself and attend your local community college you might be able to pull that off.

I thought (though I could be wrong) that in order for you to be independent from your parents for college financial aid that you had to be 24 or married or financially responsible for a child. Otherwise we would all be kicking our kids out of the house!

Cornell…

You will be considered a dependent of your parents until age 24 (unless you marry or do some other qualified thing).

If you have the stats for Cornell, then you probably have the stats to get a great merit scholarship from elsewhere. That may be your only choice.

In the meantime, try to repair your relationship with your parents.

Is the problem that they have the money but won’t pay?

What year in high school are you?
