I can’t log in at the admitted page, and I think that’s a bad sign. (I live in Cali so I won’t know for sure until tomorrow).

I’ve heard of schools rejecting students if they think they are applying there for a safety school. I was wondering if my applying to Columbia hurts my chances of getting into Barnard. Or if maybe a rejection from Barnard could possibly mean I might be getting into Columbia. What I really hope isn’t true is that a rejection from Barnard means I’m not getting into any of the other private schools I applied to. I did get into UCLA, so I don’t believe I’m underqualified.

Any thoughts?

I know this doesn't help you, but I applied to Columbia and I can log in to the Barnard page. I'm almost certain the admissions departments between the two schools don't communicate in the way you are suggesting. Good luck, though.

Yes, I don't really think they would talk to each other like that. I think the schools I applied to (which colleges can see on your FAFSA I believe) may have suggested Barnard is my safety. I heard Wellesley also released acceptance letters Friday, so perhaps tomorrow when I find out what Wellesley says, I'll be able to figure out what a Barnard rejection means for me. Hopefully it doesn't mean anything bad.

It is times like these when I am really glad I decided to apply to some UC's just in case. However, this is all making me wonder about the stupid/wonderful ELC system though. I only applied to LA and Berkeley because I have the ELC and I knew if I was rejected from all the privates and LA/Berkeley, one of the UC's would have to accept me and I'd just go there. Thus I didn't apply to a ton of easy UC's or any other obnoxious amount of backups. And the other 6 schools I applied to probably indicate to Barnard that it's my last choice.

I'd better not think about this anymore, or I'll just get worked up. Best wait till tomorrow. Thanks. :)

GO UCLA. im in the same boat as you.
yayy. or boo that we cant log into the page :/

Honestly, I think a Barnard rejection makes everything a lot easier for me. If I get into any of the other 4 privates I applied to, I'd probably choose them over UCLA. But if it was down to Barnard and UCLA, I'd probably lean more towards UCLA and be horribly conflicted.

Let's hope it all works out for the best. And if not? Bruins 2010 baby! :)

^^ I'm in the SAME exact position as you fiddledd, we might see each other at UCLA next year.

colleges do NOT see your other schools on the fafsa. they only know if you tell them on the "what other schools are you applying to?" section.

as for barnard and columbia, there's no communication between the two of them, they are completely independent in terms of admissions. a barnard rejection would more likely indicate a columbia rejection as well, since the schools are both quite selective; but the results are independent.

i hope and pray that ill get into columbia :/

yes -- colleges only know what other schools you're applying to if you tell them, and even then, they DO NOT use it against you -- it's for their own info! colleges may reject you if you are way overqualified and they're sure you won't go, but i doubt barnard would do this. it's an amazing school, and i highly doubt that it's a safety for anyone.

Barnard would reject someone they didn't think would attend, but they wouldn't make that judgement based on "oh, they're too good." Adcoms are really good at reading between the lines, no matter how well you thought you faked enthusiasm. But even then, if they really want you, they'll admit you and hope they can convince you to attend later.
