What if you don't get in.....

Yeah, prolly commit suicide. If that doesn't work out I'll go to this national college in Vietnam, with this lingering sense of compunction for having thrown $400+ out of the window. Jeez, I just don't know how to word it to my parents, "I was rejected by all the seven colleges I applied to." (They don't know the first thing about this application business.)
Seriously, it'll be an enormous emotional letdown. We should prepare a healthy frame of mind for it. I for one will find it particularly hard to face the facts, but then, hey, that's life:D

Everyone who hasnt listened to the song 'Life is a roller coaster" by Ronan Keatings should listen it atleast once :D

miaoling, you only applied to 7 schools? :O

Only? Ehhh....they already cost me $400...meh. I know $400 is chickenfeed compared with the fortune that you guys spent on this business. But for my family, it's a totally different kettle of fish. I did have to confine myself to schools that 1. waive the TOEFL 2. are need-based for ALL students 3. accept Commonapp. Admittedly I'm stupid to have left myself no safeties. Anyone in the same plight?

Would probably take a year of...

I already got in. Applied to only one school, which is my top choice and goes by the name of Reed College. :)

miaoling, my case is similar to that of urs

don't you people qualify for a fee waiver???

even then its a costly process...

That's already with the waivers doing their work;) $400 is already a huge sum, but I heard someone on the first page say s/he spent $1500 :O I tried to cut down on everything: took the SATs and TOEFL only once, used fee waivers, use regular mail instead of express mail, picked schools that waive the TOEFL once you have this SAT Verbal score. I even rushed for the Jan 2005 SAT I b/c they were going to add $12 to the fee;)
@Ronty: I thought you had this college in India? Anyway, nothing certain yet. We're still in a pretty precarious position:(

A lot of my schools were free online applications (sweet, though I wonder now if it's some sort of evil plot to usher in more applications and thus lower their acceptance rate) or free for intels overseas (thanks, Knox and Bates), but I took the SAT I and II's numerous times and TOEFL only once, though only two schools needed it for sure :(

I don't qualify for fee waivers at my school because we actually pay the school fees, according to my GC's logic. (Pwsah. Embassy pays the bulk of it. If my parents had to pay all of it, I'd have to go to another school.) Lots of SAT fees...Not to mention the additional "more than 4 schools chosen" costs, too.

I think I spent about...hmmm...$500? I have no clue about how much it was to mail them packets.

Hmm I think I spent $500 dis application year (applied 8 colleges but thank god 3 are free for internationals) and another $500 for the previous application year...

I am going to calculate the cost this afternoon... I really wonder how much money this whole "adventure" has cost me

I applied for six schools; two of which didn't need SAT I scores so I didn't send them. I managed to get an app fee waiver for them all. Only took SAT I once, but I'll feel bad abt the money if I get rejected.

TOEFL: If your first language is English, do you still have to take it?

TOEFL: No...unless some schools says being from a country where English isn't THE official language makes you have to take TOEFL.

miaoling, i'm in pretty much the same boat. lol actually, in an even leakier one ---i only applied to 6 schools. and to only one "match".
i'm fine & cheery about the whole thing most of the time, but there are always moments when i get this sudden wave of "aaah! i'm not gonna get in anywhere!!"
the admissions process is freaky. and unpredictable.
which is probably the best reason we should stop worrying about it;)

anyway, good luck 2 u:)
and don't worry so much abt letting urself or your parents down. even if it comes to the worst, i think you would've regretted not trying at all much, much more.

okay, i'm not in the admissions process yet, being at least a year early and all... but i am really curious: why da heck do you guys spend $400-$500???!!

Jo.InC.: Application fees are around $50 per college. Then there's another nearly $50 for SAT I (and more $$$ if you take the Subject Tests), and $140 (says izzy) for TOEFL. Oh, and the extra scores for both SATs and TOEFL.

Hm, no wonder the US is so rich... :p

Not mention the fees of actually mailing the stuff...DHL or registered or UPS or such. It's a bother and lots of money.

I paid ~$700. $250 for SATs(wow that's a lot) and $40 for PROFILE and another $45 for SAT reorting. $110 for DHL and ARAMEX. $25 faxing documents...$90 for printing papers and recommendations. $25 for certifying certificates...jeez and I might be rejected by all universities...

My poor parents I will really feel sad for them if I get rejected!!
