What if you don't have a counselor recommendation?

What if you don’t have a counselor recommendation? Will your application immediately be thrown away?

No. They’ll call and ask your school why no document.

If there isn’t a counselor at your school, I have heard of other school officials writing the counselor rec, such as the principal or the vice principal. Is that your situation?

OP attends school in NY.

Most counselor “recs” are minor in nature since most GC’s don’t know their students. The colleges know this and it’s not problematic. The main role of the GC supplied docs are the school report and your transcript. If he/she happens to be able to add a few words, then that’s simply gravy.

I spoke w/my guidance counselor twice in four years – once to tell him the schools I was applying. Whatever he sent in for me didn’t detract from my apps – all resulted in accepts.

Thank you. My counselor is just going to be submitting the rec a few days late so that’s why I was worried but apparently it won’t negatively affect my application if I have everything else submitted to my common app. And yeah @T26E4 I figured they didn’t matter much especially since my counselor is writing 450 recs.

Almost all colleges are okay with a few days late. A couple (UMichigan was one for a while) really want stuff by the due date. But most are flexible, especially about the stuff you don’t control. Think about it. They get thousands of apps rolling in right around the due date. They can’t look at them all right away anyway. So if it is not complete, they just wait until it is. Get the stuff you can control in on time.
