What if you don't write the "Why Duke" essay?

The app said it wouldn't affect your chances if you didn't write the essay...so I didn't write it. :( How badly will this affect my chances?

i felt like the "optional" essay was a test to see how commited an applicant is to the university...however, it may just be an additional factor if they have questions about your application...if the rest of your application looks great, then don't worry about it.

I wasn't going to write it either, but then my best friend got admitted early decision and all of a sudden I would really like to be accepted haha. I agree with my fellow Potter friend (haha, love the sn, expecto_patronum), it shows that much more of a commitment or an interest. If Duke is one of your top choices, as it is mine, I think it would be a mistake to leave it out. It's always a good idea to do everything in your power to show the AdComs that you are right for Duke.

exactly, thatgirl. as Duke was my top choice, i did everything i could to make the admissions process more personal. i did the optional essay, sent the optional art supplement, and got an optional recommendation. prove to the admissions people how enthusiastic you are to attend their school.
