What if you got a 'D' in Intermediate Algebra

So it looks like I might end up with a D in Intermediate Algebra (professor was absolutely terrible). However, I'm already enrolled for Business Calculus for the Fall. Let's say if the UC (probably UCSB) sees the D in Intermediate Algebra but sees that I passed Business Calculus with an A or B and let's also say that I've completed their TAG requirements. Would they look at that D grade and reject me or accept me because I completed the required Business Calculus course? Do they want to see that you've passed Intermediate Algebra as well? Major is Economics and Accounting, by the way. I'll also add that Intermediate Algebra is a pre-req for Business Calc, but the system still allows you to register for higher math classes.

is intermediate algebra even UC-transferable?

No. It’s not UC-transferable.

bump. anyone? =/

Don’t blame the professor for your lack of math ability. UCs will definitely take notice of the D, even if it isn’t applied into your UC GPA*. It will look very bad. Sorry if my response isn’t what you were looking for. I was in a similar situation as you a year ago when I dropped a trig class because I was going to get a B.

*Source: My cal rep.

It’s not a UC-transferable course, so it is not factored into your UC GPA, which is what the UCs are looking for.

EDIT: I had three Fs on my transcript. Two were UC-transferable and one was not. I only retook one of those and got into every UC I applied to. Retake the class, pass it, and don’t look back.

Thanks ya’ll. Anyone else have any input?

If I was gonna get a D in algebra I would drop the class. You do not need it. It’ll just hurt your GPA. as far as admissions standards, it doesn’t matter per se, but it really doesn’t look good.

If you have a tag it doesn’t matter

You could have an F in ballrom dance and algebra 1. If you have over a 3.0 and major prereqs done (and whatever else conditions, i forgot) then you are guaranteed admissions. Guaranteed. well unless you apply to ucsd and they mess it up…haha j/k
I don’t have extreme confidence in someone getting a D in Alg 2 and an a in calc though.

How are you able to take biz calc without a foundation in alg?!

I don’t think nontransferable grades are given much thought in the app review. I received a C in trig and still got into Cal/Ucla (I suck at math).

i got a D in remedial math class, and i got into ucla, usc, berkeley

Anyone else not get a passing grade in a remedial math class and still get accepted by a UC?

I wonder if this is the reason freshman admits at Berkeley seem to have such disdain for transfer students.

^ still had a 3.8 so dont judge.

going to CC is an option for them as well.

haha At my community college the sequence of math class is Intermediate Algebra, Trig, Precal then Business Calc. At surrounding cc’s it is Intermed Alg, College Alg then Bus Calc…

Either way looks like you are skipping a class or two? If you are getting a D in Intermed Algebra I would think it would be difficult to pass Business Calc without the necessary preparation… Anyway Intermediate algebra is not transferrable to any college so it shouldn’t factor into your gpa…

i got a D in Int. Alegbra a few semesters ago. Still got accepted to UC’s.

I feel like an idiot for having to drop Calc 1. It just makes me question my intellectual capacity.

Are you going to give it another shot? A lot of students don’t pass Calc there first time through, so you won’t be alone. Hopefully it will click for you this time around and you can appreciate the power of calculus.

I just decided to change my major from Econ to Poli-sci. I knew I was going to hit a wall sooner or later if I stayed an Econ major.

D in intermediate algebra? Seriously? WOOOOOWWWWWW You are a f uc ktard!
