i have a bessst friend who's going to Northwestern(MY dream school!!) this year, and i'm really happy for him!

But we were talking the other day, and he says he's really worried about him being unathletic. He's worried that he'll have a hard time making friends and finding activities to do on the weekend. But in my opinion he's a really funny guy and pretty sociable too, i think lol. so is it really hard for unathletic people to socialize in college? i'm almost getting worried myself, but i'm a girl so it's not much of an issue, but anyway is it true? is Northwestern a really athletic school? what do you guys do in dorms to have fun, other than sports?

northwestern is NOT a jock school, trust me on that.

he will be fine, he sounds like a perfect fit.

people drink or go to the city or downtown evanston for activities much more than they do intramural sports, and the intramural sports leagues are not very competitive because, again, northwestern is not a jock school.

hahaha, i'm not laughing at you theresaliu, not at all, but i just find it amusing that anyone would even begin to consider NU as an athletic school. yes, we have some awesome D1 times, and shape magazine did name us third fittest school in the country, but this is a NERD school, not a jock school. so really, don't worry. and intramurals are a ton of fun.

OH great, NU is considered a "nerd school?" No offense to any students and I don't care about the jock factor. Hmmm, I really hope there's more to it than that...

SPAC is huge so idk... maybe you can become athletic? im a guy and pretty athletic. i got the sense that many NU guys play sports. idk maybe b/c i stayed at Bobb, but i saw a bunch of ppl playing softball, throwing around a baseball, tennis, and playing soccer. i like to think that NU has an athletic student body on average.

haha this thread is funny, but ridewitbd24's response is even funnier, "maybe you can become athletic?" i'm sure most unathletic people are not unathletic by choice.

i'm not at NU yet so i don't exactly know how it is there but i'm sure you there are people who don't play sports. i mean NU's not a complete jock school right?

There is an ABUNDANCE of opportunities to enjoy athleticism (IM sports, SPAC, pickup games in the quad/deering field, etc.) but you definitely do not have to be. There's plenty of other things to do, it's not a factor in any way.

Drink/go to parties, hang out in people's rooms, go into Evanston, go into Chicago, go see a production at NU, there's really never a lack of things to do that aren't sports.

i know i sounded kinda stupid saying that but it seems like he wishes he was more athletic. i know many of us spent our high school lives with busy schedules and stuff. maybe he never had the time to exercise as much as he wanted to. i think he has ample opportunity to at NU with SPAC and other activities.

^^^ trust me, if you want it to be, northwestern is an enormous party school. if you hang out with the right people, it would not a problem to go out six nights a week.

definitely a nerd school. But that doesn't mean we are socially incompetent. We were the nerds in high school who were student body president, editor of the newspaper, etc.

and some people try to pretend they aren't nerds by living in bobb ("party" dorm on campus that is very tame compared to any state school dorm), or joining "elite" sororities/frats (no one actually cares except for the people in them). But in reality... we are all nerds.

NU is neither a "nerd" school or a "jock" school (tho, it does have it's share of both) - and if anything, there is quite a mix of people at NU.

As for the OP's friend, he doesn't have to worry - there are plenty of people who have no interest in sports.

Having said that - IM sports, particularly men's floor hockey, tend to be real competitive (esp. among the fraternity teams).

How long does it typically take to go from the NU campus to Chicago?
[/quote]

that depends:

wrigleyville (where the cubs play): 25-30 mins
lincoln park (where the best bar scene is): 35-40 minutes
the loop (millenium park, sears tower, navy pier, etc.): 1 hour

this is on the public train that has multiple stops along campus (~2 blocks away from any given place)

if you catch the express (which i believe runs until 6pm every day) it's about 15 minutes to wrigleyville, 25 to lincoln park, and maybe 40 to the loop (i've never taken the express to the loop)

Cool, and how late do those trains operate? If I am in Chicago at like 1 AM will I be stranded there? Sorry but I have no clue how real mass transit works, the bus system in California operates until like 6 PM and is a complete joke (almost always late, smells like a jar of pennies inside).

the "purple line" is the one that goes through evanston, south to a stop called howard

at howard (about 1-2 miles maybe from northwestern) the purple line ends and you have to transfer to red line trains to continue any further south (ie into the city)

the red line runs all day and all night, 24 hours

the purple line stops running at 2am. the last purple line out of howard is at 1:48. the red line doesn't go to evanston.

so if you miss that train, it's not the end of the world, it's a short cab ride back from howard, which you can get to at any time of the night.

when i drove to evanston from the west side, it took about 25minutes. but there was no traffic and we were lost. have any of you guys ever biked that trail that runs along the lake? i really wanna do that. how long does that take?
