If an applicant has a low GPA (I mean really low... like 3.4), but he/she has REALLY STELLAR recs,EC's,test scores, interview, essays, hook(s) and shows a genuine love and a want to go to Yale. Do you think that person could earn acceptance?

gpa is the most important thing in admissions… so probably not…

Under Academic Ability:

“Yale is above all an academic institution. This means academic strength is our first consideration in evaluating any candidate. The single most important document in your application is your high school transcript, which tells us a great deal about your academic drive and performance over time. We look for students who have consistently taken a broad range of challenging courses in high school and done well. Your high school teachers can provide extremely helpful information in their evaluations. Not only do they discuss your performance in their particular class or classes, but often they write about such things as your intellectual curiosity, energy, relationships with classmates, and impact on the classroom environment. Obviously it is important to ask for recommendations from teachers who know you well.”

Even if they were all honors/AP/IB classes, mostly B/B+'s, only Frosh. and Soph. year, and I go to a really hard school, and my middle school was crap? Well…I shouldn’t make excuses for myself, but thank you for responding.

If anyone has any opinion or knows from personal experience please respond!

Sorry, there are too many applicants that have near perfect academics AND stellar extracurriculars, recommendations, etc. for there to be a legit shot at getting in for someone with a 3.4 GPA. You might go to a hard school, but so do others and unless your school is so difficult that a 3.4 GPA puts you in the top 5% …

That’s not to say another great school won’t accept you though :)

^ Exactly. And when you said they are in ap classes, not to be a jerk but they dont really care. They want the kids with many ap classes who gets A’s in them, and I think most of the applicants fall into that rage. Not trying to be nasty but that’s just the way it works… dont worry though youl have awesome shots at other top schools… as annoying as it sounds… if you are determined to succeed you will whether you go to yale or a community college.

It all depends on how stellar the rest of your application is. If it’s significantly more stellar than that of the average accepted applicant, then you have a shot. That’s quite dubious :/
