What info/docs to get to extra recommendation writer?

Hi all.

I am going to receive a rec. letter from an adviser of an internship I've been working in, in the summer. Since I am the first person that he will ever write a college LOR for (he has written letters of reference though), he asked me what I wanted in the letter and said that he's very happy to write based on what I would like to see in the letter.

I have some questions.

Is a letter of reference fundamentally different from a letter of recommendation? Will I need to explain a distinction, if any? Should I ask him to write of a specific example of my personality qualities, or should I ask him to write about the academic quality of the works that I have written over the course of the internship? Finally, what's a good length for the letter?

As this is the first letter he will write for a high school student, I want to make sure that I understand fully what colleges look for in a letter of recommendation so that I can convey these aspects to him.

I appreciate any advice that you may have. :)

Time to bring up my post…I don’t have much time to write this letter. Thanks again for any advice.

Here’s what MIT suggests:

Thank you. That was quite helpful.

Any more advice from others? Thanks!

And another question: what’s a good way of asking the recommendation writer to mention that the internship wasn’t acquired through any sort of connection?
