what internship to choose

Hello, so this last fall I landed and internship on my own. My mom on the other hand has a friend who is a civil engineer and wants me to intern at his company. In the fall, this friend kept saying he would talk to people about me and get me in, but I like to have more than one option. Especially because it seemed like he really didn't have anything lined up for me. Well, I went ahead and went to a career fair at my school and surprisingly got an internship on my own for a company I'm really interested in working for. It's a construction company which I think really suites me because I want to do more hands on stuff instead of just design all day. Well, my mom knows I have this internship, but she insists that I still apply for the other (and suggests that if I get it, I should take it). She emailed the friend to send me information, and now the recruiter at his company has emailed me to apply and I feel like I can't back out of applying now. If I hadn't already accepted the internship I got on my own, I wouldn't care as much about applying for the other. But I don't want to have to go back (and I really just don't want to) and tell them "Never mind, I don't want to intern here." I told my mom I didn't want to and she's getting upset with me claiming this is a really bad decision and just really making me feel bad. I guess my question is, should I go ahead and apply? And if I do apply and get an offer, should I take it and tell the other company I changed my mind?

You should not apply. It is your life, and you have already made plans for your summer; that’s the end of it.

That said, if there is a chance you could get an internship that would not conflict with the one you already committed to, then that might be a nice option.
