What is a bad rec?

I can't really imagine a teacher actually writing something bad about a student in their letter of rec, so what really makes the difference between a good rec and a bad rec?

I read one of mine and though the teacher really likes me (I'm positive), I think she was just a little lazy in the letter writing. It's not bad and compliments me and everything, but it isn't amazing. Are any really amazing? Is it bad if it's just sort of, "Expresses opinions" "Exceptional student" "A leader" and nothing too nifty?

a "bad" rec is when the teacher doesn't really point out unique stuff about u and just says ur a good student blah blah, i mean everyone gets that

Is getting that kind of rec really hurtful in the admissions process? Because my teacher flat out told me she could have done a better job. I don't know what her problem is, because she really really likes me. I don't want her rec to hurt my admissions chances. And my old counselor retired last year so the new one obviously does not know me but NYU wants a counselor rec.

I was wondering that too. I asked 3 teachers and they all agreed to do it but only one showed it to me. One of them I'm pretty sure wrote a good one because she's very intelligent (she went to an ivy league), she knows what colleges want, I did very well in her class & she likes me. Another teacher I've had all four years so I figured that would be a good one especially since i got As all four years and always had the top grades in her class and the last one I wasn't so sure about her skills but she LOVES me and she showed it to me and asked if I wanted her to change anything....I don't know if it's good or not. She starts off by saying accepting me will be the easiest decision and the best thing for the school, then she goes on to say that I earned exceptional grades as well as her respect. Then she points out a specific accomplishment that I achieved in her class. Lastly she talks about my community service. Do you think thats good?
