I know that it looks very good on your application to have a job of do some sort of volunteering. I am currently a junior, and very busy with my other ECs and schoolwork. I would like to either volunteer at a hospital or tutor. My hospital volunteering would be 3 hrs a week for the whole school year. My tutoring would be about the same amount of time, and paid. I do have plenty of people who have asked me to tutor them. As I have equal interest in both, and genuinely want to do both, which would look better on my college app?

Since the tutoring is paid that wouldn’t be volunteering…so if you want to have something volunteer-related on your application then I would say go with the hospital.

Well actually the tutoring would be about 1.5 hrs a week through my schools program, and 2-3 hrs paid per week from private tutoring, so a little bit of both.

There is no one EC that is better than another other than in the eye of the student. Sometimes, it’s the common activity that trumps an activity with glamour. You need to do what interests you the most. Colleges realize that not everyone can do an activity like perform research in a university lab and that EC will differ from school to school and region to region.
