Hi, everyone.
I applied for CAS psychology major but was put into the core program in liberal studies and I have no idea why. My SATs and GPA all reach NYU’s middle 50% range.
I heard that admitted by this program instead of the one I applied for means I am a less qualified student for NYU and students from other undergraduate programs will think I am less clever than they are. Is that true? How do people see this program really and is this program offering courses that are not as good?
I am really confused!
it is not less good. If you look at NYU published metrics by Wasserman Center, in fact, kids form the liberal studies program have placement rates of 97.73 post graduate as opposed to 94.79% in CAS, and starting salaries on average of $50,286 as opposed to $48,605 for CAS graduates.
Furthermore, you are allowed to transitioning into CAS and other schools at NYU. The process starts your sophomore year.
With LS, I think, they either believe you need a little strengthening in CORE subjects, or, in many cases, believe you fit the program better.
This is not the B team. If you download and read the NYU Bulletin about the LS and GLS program you will see that these are both two incredibly exciting and innovative programs. Classes, like at Brown, are taught in seminar fashion with student participation.
Congratulations on getting into NYU, stop having these negative thoughts. The only people that would “look down” at you are insecure kids. And remember, a Stern kid might look down on anyone, and if a Columbia Univeristy kid comes on campus he may look down on all of them. All that is silly, what’s important is that you got into a fantastic school and environment and will be coming out of it with the same degree.
You should call admissions if you have any questions.
My daughter is in LSP Core in London and it couldn’t have been a more exceptional program. She’s had the best experience, best professors - including ones from London School of Economics, met members of the British and European Parliament, experienced London, etc… its been a fabulous experience. We are only sorry every year cannot be at one of NYU’s international campuses. The experience is more than you could dream of. (I wrote a HUGE description in the other threads if you are interested in details!)
Thank you both for answering. Now I know more about where I am going to.
