What IS a fellowship anyway?

What's it used for, and what are some competitive and prestigious programs?

Often what would be called a “scholarship” at the undergraduate level is called a “fellowship” at the graduate level. Some of them have names. Some don’t. If you aren’t applying to grad school yet, you really don’t have to worry about this. If you are, you should take your questions to the Grad School Forum. Click on “Discussion Home” in the upper-left of this screen and scroll down to find it.

I’ve seen some fellowships offered for undergraduates for things like study abroad. My question is, what types of expenses do fellowships cover for undergraduates?

seadog…what do fellowships cover? It depends. Every fellowship has a listing of what it will cover and they vary wildly. You would need to check EACH fellowship you have an interest in. There is no one answer to your question.

Some fellowships are partial tuition awards, some cover other things. You gotta check.
