What is a first generation college student?

If my father went to a university for 3 years but had his scholarship taken away and forced to drop out, does that make me a first generation college student? Basically, he attended but did not graduate.

On college applications, when they ask for my parent's level of education can I possibly mark only "high school diploma" instead of the "some college" choice. Since he has no formal documentation of his attendance at the university, will it matter?

A first generation college student is someone who's ancestors did not attend college :D. If you don't want to list your father under 'some college' you can list him under highschool diploma. Universities won't check that information out. It's up to you. But I don't see why you would do that, though.

Well, he attended but did not graduate.

The only reason I wouldn't mark "some college" is because I am not sure whether or not that would make me ineligible for first generation status.

You would put "some college"; they may or may not consider you first-gen, but for all intents and purposes, it seems as though you would be.
